I was embarrassed when I realized how easy it was to *check* the clearance on my last bike, it was actually more effort to get the bike to the shop and pay them to do the check than it was to just do the check myself in the garage. Pretty much just unbolt the cover, rotate the engine to whatever position the manual tells you to rotate it to, then slip in feeler gauges until you find the one that just fits. Then bolt the cover back on.
However, depending on how the valves clearance is actually adjusted that's where you might want some expertise. All the models I've ever owned involved a fair bit of disassembly to get at the shims. Fortunately I've actually never yet found valve clearance out of spec on any of said bikes.
But I've had a lot of good experiences over a lot of years with Burnaby Kawasaki at Edmonds and Canada Way, and have heard positive things from several friends that had work done there as well.
Cheers
