What octane?

I have a 2002 640 lc4 enduro and I try and run the chevron 94 octane. If that is not around then the next highest is usually 91 octane. A friend has ridden his in Mexico and had to use low octane at times. He said he just does not run it as hard to prevent the "pinging" from pre ignition.

In your manual it recommends some insane Octane number, that's because the Europeans have a different formula for rating Octane. I believe KTM says 96 Octane (Euro formula)minimum, but that's like 87 Octane here in North America.

When taking gas from drums in mexico or other places Octane is questionable, there is a secondary ignition map you can select on the LC4 for low octane gas to eliminate the pinging.

It's just a wire you disconnect on your wiring harness, check your manual or search KTMtalk.com. BajaDave put a switch on his instrument panel that connects or disconnects that jumper depending on what kind of fuel he is running. He rides in Baja several times a year, and has had zero fuel problems. I'm thinking that would be a good mod for me too. (Optimistically thinking he's going to Baja in January...)

To answer your question, I put the 94 from Chevron in whenever it's convenient to give the bike a treat! But I have run tankfuls of 91 and 88 through with no ill effects, even at altitude in the mountains.

Cheers!

The BMWs might have the same octane labels on the bikes as KTM. The BMW label list two numbers i.e. 95(ROZ)/85(MOZ). This one means use premium (91 Oct.) :)

The thing is there are two "real" octane numbers "Research Octane Number", the first one above, and "Motor Octane Number", the second number above. That was confusing for the americans, so to clear things up they invented a third number, "Pump Octane Number" which is the average of the other two.

Sometimes shown on the pump as "(R+M)/2 method". Now isn't that easier? So for the example at top that would be (95+85)/2 which equals 90 or "standard premium(91)" octane not "super premium(94)". "Pump Octane" can also be labeled as AKI same same.
