What the heck does a slow jet do?

bought a fixer upper for the kid. had to clean the carb and noticed (after some researching) that this has a slowjet? anyone know what this is/does?

I think that refers to the pilot jet... Off idle slow speed circuit.
Mid range uses needle.
High speed- Main jet
The circuits overlap as engine accelerates.
