Check the basics first. How old is the battery? Battery voltage should be 12.6V or better (load test it with a headlight bulb if you have aspare one), if not, suspect battery or charging system (see below). Also check for good continuity between the battery negative post and the engine, there is a black ground wire running from the battery(-) to the engine that MUST be attached. If battery voltage is good check power to the key switch, there should be battery voltage at the red wire with the key off. With key on check for power tothe other thick wire coming out of the switch (orange?) if not suspect a bad switch (unlikely). This connection is behind the headlight shroud in a neat little bundle, and while you're in there have a loock for attempts to wire in accessory power, sometimes people do dumb things with scotchlocks. Have a look at the wiring harness bundle where it travels past the steerer tube as well, they do chafe and flex there. Ifyou have power through the switch, you could be looking for an open circuit caused by a previous failed repair attempt, look for suspiciousblack tape covered lumpy bulges in any harness. Have a close look at the connector on the left side by the carb with the three yellow wires running through it.

Get a wiring diagram if you can and trace where the power should go.

Go to http://www.thumpertalk.com and check out the DRZ forum, there's a detailed charging system testing tutorial in the FAQ section if you need it.
