Hey Everybody. I was wondering if anyone has had a problem with starting their bikes with the clutch engaged. My bike is an 06, and has 6000km on it. I recently crashed, bending the bars, snapping the right peg bolts, and busting up the coolant side tank cover. I've already installed new bars, straightened the peg and installed with hardned bolts, and fixed the sidecover. The problem is the bike will no longer start in gear, with the clutched lever depressed. The donkey's at the dealership told me, and I quote, "oh, you can't start the klr's in gear. You need to be in neutral." This guy was the wrench there, can you beleive that? Anyways, any ideas?

thanks; Bill

I believe there is a safety switch to the clutch lever so you cant start it unless the lever is pulled in. Your crash probably messed this switch up.

my 99 will not start in gear with clutch out, will start in neutral with clutch in or out. will start in gear if clutch is pulled in. and the engine will stall if i let out the clutch in gear with the stand down. hope this tidbit helps. ED

hi bill,

i have the same problem with my klr. i was just trying to find the thread that explained it. maybe it was another forum...

anyways i think what you need to do is disconnect / clean the clutch switch. i don't know where that is, but i'll try to find it as i need to do it as well.

It is underneath the clutch lever pivot point. 2 small phillips heads, a little emery cloth and some dielectric grease and you're good to go.

Mine used to do the same..
Remove 2 screws by clutch lever, clean contacts, i used a copper brush. I also with a small flat screw driver, pulled the contact out a bit, i did not remove completely.
Know my bike starts in neutral with clutch on or off and in gear with clutch on.

Bill,
You may have done some damage to the side stand switch (the bike thinks the stand is down even when it's up),there are two wires going to it, cross the wires, if your bike starts it's the switch. Solder them together above the switch and throw out the switch unless you're the sort that would drive off with the side stand down.
