GOING TO TRY AND GET A SHOT DOWN THE THROTTLE BODY FROM INSIDE THE AIR-BOX.
Only about 1500k on the scoot, I don't think all that much went through the system as the filter is still pretty clean.

The dealer did the 1000k check-up / oil change. Not sure if they should have noticed this or not.
I know in my industry the intake system gets a complete inspection on the first service....that "WE THE DEALER, PAY FOR"

I have a cpl more to add into this post.

The leak is also at the front of the airbox.
He just washed the bike and water even got into it.
This is from right behind the steering stem.

I have contacted the dealer Wingman got the bike from new, pretty sure the outcome will be KTM installing a new air-box.

BUT........what about the the cylinder and rings.
I suppose a leak down test and boreascope would answer that concern...:gaah:

Badly shaped air box indeed - should be replaced under warranty. I haven't seen that on the various 690's I've poked about.

Poking around I see that this has happened to a number of them and that there was a TSB in 2012, but I haven't found it yet.
KTM said one guy "modified" his air box so they wouldn't cover him...but I have no idea what he did to it.. that was his side of it on ADV Rider.

I looks like the upper rectangle ring that has the molded-in brass threads is somehow melted/bonded to the lower airbox but has pulled away for some reason...or was never actually bonded in those 3 areas(RR corner and the 2 front corners).
Will see how this plays out.:cross:
It's pretty obvious what the problem/ defect is. This is the first time we have even had the cover off the airbox. Talking with the dealer that did the 1000k service this morning ,they said they checked/ changed the air filter and inspected the intake system.
SO it has another 500k on it since the service.....back and forth to work on the hi-way, and about 30-50k off road behind the 950.

I'm confident that KTM will work this out proper:ted:

Well I see your sons problem right here........"off road behind the 950" The dust machine

Good luck with your dealer and KTM

I had a similar problem with my BMW X challenge, solved it by alway riding up front,
next time put the kid up front. OK

I haven't had this problem with mine but I have had those brass threaded inserts pull out on my airbox. I glued them in and now zap strap the cover down as a safety. I also forgot to connect a breather hose to the underside of the airbox for several weeks.
Both times I got dust into my intake system but it seems to run fine. That was about 5000 kms ago and I am at 22,000 kms now so I guess I won't know for sure until I do a top end.

My 690 is fine, and I even went and checked it when I saw this thread.

My problem is that I don't have any headlights, brake light, signal lights, or horn.

It is booked in at holeshot next wed.

Nope...not a word.
Nothing from KTM,
Nothing from RTR other than "we will send off the pictures"
Nothing from Holeshot other than "We will send this of to KTM"

Nothing from anyone saying to seal up the air box or just ride it and completely dust the engine......

I went with through this with the 950se after the subframe cracked.."we will send this off to KTM" Never heard a word back from anyone.
THis is the "service after the sale" I guess.

We really like these bikes but the dealers need to get their shit together and be professional.

yes joker, a month should be enough time for this to travel through the system and get back to you with a plan to fix/take care of your bike.get on em- and hard!when they are afraid to answer the phone every day-because it might be you again, asking about the progress on your bike problem, chances are they will get in gear and get something done. dropping in multiple times a week helps things get moving as well. be the pain that they want to fix!
