I have a 2001 XR 650R stock trim... and found climbing long steep hills the bike just seems to run out of gas and shuts down...3 for 3 on the same hill about the same distance up in the interior on a warm day....then on Sunday at Chipmunk in tight single track it did the same thing 3 times when I think it got hot....soooo I am tending to belive it is a over heating problem...??? perhaps boiling the gas, vapor lock, or anything else you can think of....I have taken the carb apart 2 times hoping to find crap in it but it is clean....

Anyone else have this problem???

Thanks

normally vapor lock would happen at any hard throttle regardless of hill or not. Possibly float bowl too low? Dunno if its possible to boil your gas on an XR at least ive nvr seen it happen.

How is your jetting? have you had a look at your plug it could be running really lean. You say its stock trimXR's are jetted way lean from factory especially if you have done any intake or exhaust modifications (removed baffle etc) and stayed with the same stock jetting.

Also look to see if dirt is in gastank petcock strainer screen causing partial blockage.

Float setting.....crud in the tank partially blocking the screen??

Looking in my Clarke tank on the dr one day I noticed some crud in there that would go to the back of the tank--and screen-- and could have maybe caused problems. I grained the tank and rinced out with newgas.

Set it on reserv and try it, see if it makes a differance.

On my 99DR650 the rubber seal in the petcok got all jammed up once and stopped the flow.

If its a heating issue the first thing i would check is the thermostat, its a known issue and their are lots of articles on how to fix. Many in the hotter climates just remove it and claim no problems (not something i would do here). If its a new (secondhand) bike drain the coolant asap as some people have been known to use the wrong coolant and tap water which is not good.....

I suspect by your description its a float bowl issue, google it and I know you will find the fix on one of many big red pigs sites.
