xt 350 regulator question

my xt 350 regulator has crapped itself producing too high a voltage and burns out my light at anything above a few thousand rpm.
i was wondering if i can simply put a universal reg in it and get rid of the battery basically convert it to ac(headlight is ac ) like a TT350
i see the univesal regs for under $20 online but was wondering who carries them locally

What you are talking about is a regulator rectifier, you can use a universal one as they all work the same. Unless the xt has some special issues

Convert the bike to AC?? I would think that the bike needs DC power for something other than the headlight, maybe the cdi? Anyhow a universal regulator rectifier would be around 40.00 at Gnarly Parts

interestingly the reg rect on the xt is split and it runs the ac through the reg to the headlight and through the rectifier for dc on the other lights and batt.
the ignition is a seperate system . the dirt only tt is ac system that runs a grounding/shorting type reg as far as i can fugure out.

where is Gnarly parts? contact info?

You have a wiring diagram, I will take a look and make some suggestions that others can comment
