Has anyone had a problem that seems to be a miss at around 5grand on the highway? (probably offroad also but hard to tell), plug is good, mileage is fine, just a minor st-tut-tering miss, maybe electrical causing a bad spark?(regulator?) whadderya think.

I would replace the plug if you haven't already done so. Plugs may look okay but the resistor in them may break down under load so it is wise to replace them from time to time and you only have one so it won't break the bank. :D

If your battery is charging and the bike is starting okay it will not be the regulator, stator or battery. It is wise to check for loose connectors in the ignition wiring. Make sure the plug cap and spark plug nut (if it has one) are tight.

Clean the air filter and drain the carb float bowl in case you have picked up some water in your gas.

Check valve clearances for a tight valve.

04klr Another shot in the dark:

5000 rpm is spinning pretty fast. High speed stutteringcould the float bowl running out of gas and leaning out the mixture at high rpm. Check your fuel flow and filters, gas cap breather and float level. Check to see if the problem occurs on afresh full tank, or goes away ifyou ease off, or go downhill.

I know that the older KLR's were prone to "lean surge" and needed the idle mixture pilot screw( something like that) backed off, 1/2 to 3/4 of a turn usually was enough. This screw is capped and of course you're not supposed to touch it. There are lots of detailed instructions on the web...Tom

1990 KLR 650

I went for a pass and the miss kicked in and I was rather embarrased that I had no power.

Took the carb out and adjusted the float to " float Higher" ( lets in more fuel )

It solved the problem

all good stuff, sure I'll change the plug as I do tend to spend lots of time cruising over 5 grand, that's sure to shorten plug life, air screw is adjusted, checked the float on my last KLR can check this one, tho I don''t suspect a lean state as I can't make it ping even fully loaded climbing a hill with the throttlewhacked open. just a weak surging kind of miss, not even bad enuf to disrupt the ride, just me being picky. all good stuff tho, thx.
