2 or 4 stroke for DS

vet-1,would you do it again on a 530 exc,klr 650,650l, drz400? it really would be cool if there were some plated 2 strokes to choose from, cause on short single track kinds of rides, jumping on at home and goning out for a quick hard scoot would be a lot of fun.

How did you guys go about plating a 2T woods bike? Someone mentioned a Husky WR250 and a 300EXC? How did you get those plated?? I'm wondering if there is some way to do it again to a similar bike? I just got rid of my Gas Gas EC200, but before I was debating on trying to register it as it's an enduro and street legal in Europe.

I have an FE390 Berg.. it is much happier on the road than my friends KTM300... and it is 90% as easy to ride ST. If you plan on putting more than a few hundred Km a year on the road I would go 4t. The 70deg bikes run for a long long time. If you do go 2t the KTM300 is really nice.

I used to ride a CR500 and I have never ridden a street legal 2 stroke dualsport. I was looking to Import a CR500E back in 2007 but wasn't sure about the legalities of registering it in Canada so I went with a 2007 EXC 525 then got a2012 EXC 500. No regrets going 4stroke.

Spent most of my riding years on a 2 smoke, but the have now discovered the thumper charm. Wouldn't hesitate to go back to 2 stroke, given the weight penalty it overcomes. MY biggest issue with the 2 strokes is the loss of fuel range as I've been spoiled by the terrific range of the DRZ with a Clarke tank. My riding companions on their KTM300s are running out near 100km, just when I'm gettin in the groove!

Yes, I agree with you that change can be a hard thing for some people. I have seen more change in the past few yers of my life that are of way greater personal impact that any descision as to what to ride could ever be. Though all this change, I have learned one thing when it comes to moto's - two strokes are my drug. I truly enjoy riding a streel legal two stroke. Is it better then a 4T? Who really cares. It is different the a 4T. A 4T does some things way better then a 2T, and vice versa. This is the exact same as asking is a 30-06 better then a 308 Win on a deer. Or is a 270 WSM better then a 270 WCF? They are all great and all have their pro's and con's. These kind of comparisions will always continue as long as we have a choice presented to us.

Like a guy who had 31 running bikes said "The best bike is the one that you are on at that moment".

Every ride will have it's limitations and quirks. Personally I love to ride all things that roll on two wheels, regardless of their brand, make, model, size, valve composition, ect, ect. But as a family man that can only afford one bike and really only have the ability to ride to and from work due to the comitments of life, I hang my helmet on the bars of my KSM. Will that change down the road, probably. But for now I love the 2T hit.

Opinions are like poop holes. My opinion, ride what stirs your soul and never look back.

My first bike was a street legal 2 stoke. Yamaha TDR 250. Wish I still had it. Not that it was a great bike, it couldn't handle a bump or being dropped, but it was unique, fun to ride (on smooth roads) and damn sexy!

+1 I have a 2010 FE390 and it is supberb off road - light, easy to ride (feels like a 250) and the maintenance on the 70 degree is easy. The reliability has been great and as a DS bike, it is soooo much easier and more fun to ride on the tough stuff than my previous Jap thumper.
