I'm picking up a 2005 640 Adventure this weekend. Is there any immediate things that should be done to it?

2003 and on units don't really have any outstanding chronic issues.... Would be good to know your bikes history and the milage on it to be able to offer suggestions as to what items you may want to check for wear......

its an 05 and it has about 20,000kms on it. And it has a skid plate already. Crash bars for sure and that pet cock does look like a good idea.

At your milage I would inspect the carb Jet needle for wear just below the clip where it passes through the slide.... Also the float needle and seat may be due for replacement soon, symptons are a weepy float bowl drain and rich running engine....

Your chain slider block that protects the swingarm will probably be due for replacement if it hasn't been already.... Also check the underside of the fuel tank for rub spots and apply padded tape over them to slow the wear....

The rear linkage and swingarm bearings should be regreased especially the link that goes to the frame.... Steering bearings also....

The fork oil should be changed and seals could probably use a wipe with a photo negative to remove grit if you dont' want to fully dissassemble the forks for cleaning....

I carry a prefab cover plate and a hose T in my tool kit just in case I experience the same misfortune as Dorky {and others} when a spill takes out the poorly located fuel tap.... Make sure to make some kind of gasket {rubber} to sandwich between the plate and the tank.....

And like Windaddiction said check your chain tension, if it looks just right then it's probably too tight.... I lean towards the slacker side of the checking method shown in the manual.....

The 640 is by far my favorite bike owned, hopefully it'll be that way for you...
David...

Oh ya. :hr: Cover that sucker! Or at least take the parts with you like David. It takes a long time to whittle a cover plate on the side of the trail.

Ifyou're going to open the carb you might as well jet it, open the airbox, and add 10 or 12 disks to the pipe - it makes a big difference. Lots of info on ADV.

Hey Gord,
What did the 10 discs do to your performance and sound. I ended up taking mine all out.
Its a bit louder but felt snappier than with the stock disc number in (cant remember how many).
Do you know where I can get more discs?
Thanks!

Hi Steve. How ya been?

I think you should have some back pressureso I'm not sure about removing the last restrictor disk. The additional disks definately increased my flow and my power. The noise level increased somewhat but not enough that the Deadzone police noticed. :D With the new jets and the additional disks the bike is much more rideable. (Dropping a tooth on the front also helped a lot).

I think the SuperTrapp disks are all the same excepteither 3", 4", or 5" so you can buy them in lots of places. I bought mine off the shelf here in Kamloops. Take one with you from your pipe and check against the new set.

Thanks Gord,
I was told by a couple of places in the Lower mainland that Supertrapp didnt exist anymore so the disks would be hard to find. I havent looked lately though.
