I'll jump back in again just for fun. i've got an 07 525 exc with all the long range baja style goodies on it. But it's not a klr type of comfortable/durable bike for those multi day/or week- km eating long range type of trips. a 650 dual sport/adventure bike needs to be different than almost anything that appears to be made today. why would you make a backwoods capable dualsport without a kickstart? why would a solo rider have to second guess himself about wanting to take a trail, because he's nervous about tipping a bike over,that he know's he can't get upright by himself. Long range dualsport bike,without some sort of cush drive? close ratio trannys,and poor lighting/electrical outputs? crappy weak subframes and small fuel tanks? Now lets talk about suspension-as none of the current manufacture's seem to think that it matters at all. I want to be able to crest a hill,dicing/playing racers with my buddy beside me, drop into a big rain-rut or cross ditch or some other obstacle and come out straight and true, without cracking all my molars and vertebra. Not sure that all this is possible, but surely somebody could come alot closer that the current offerings!

well....
i am glad the a bmw 650 single with more clearance is back.
truely am enjoying my Dakar 650 with its tank (where it's located) and its capacity (17L) AND it's fuel range with its scant fuel sipping at 80+ mpg (sorry byes, i dont know the metric for that).
too bad the tank got smaller on the Sertao (as with the g 650).
yes, some of the ideas are wonderful in respects to creating the 'perfect' bike (see some of the above posts)...but those requirements change from you to me to buddy and his wife....bottom line: you just have to customize and farkel.
so far my Dakar does what i need and i understand its limitations....i think that is a must, to bring her home in one piece cause you DIDNT try to ride that steep narrow track that you didnt know made a big drop or otherwise. that is work for a crappy plastic dirt bike that falls over gracefully and is mucH easier to right after.
i tour on and off road so hauling what i need (camperized somewhat) is part of it. so far the Dakar suits my need.
BUT still the idea of a perfect bike that is light enough but can tour and not vibrate and doesnt require tons of tuning.....
we can only hope Yamaha brings us the real goodie....660 xt tenere....then i'd have a reason to try another manufactures idea of adventure.
keep planning those biG rides for the summer or they may never happen!
