705 big bore

I'd love to try the 705 big bore for my oil sucking klr. Was wondering if anyone has done this already? Or do I have to be the guinea pig? I'm hoping to add a little more kick (less work than loosing 40lbs.) as well as solving the oil consumption. Also the piston maker claims it's about 88 grams lighter than the stock slug, this should reduce vibration, maybe.?

I assume you mean the kit by Kary, at Schnitz racing.....he makes good stuff, and I hear a lot of good things about the 685 and 705 kits.

I am doing the 685 kit and the 2nd stage head on mine this winter.

I prefer the 685 kit is all.

Whatever kit you do, get the head done as well.

do you mean using the over size valves? or polishing and porting? Stock head doesn't breath enough? what is stage 2? Do you think Kieth at mongoose could do the head work?

sorry for all the questions. I guess if you bring up the displacement it should be made to breath better. just trying to get a good bang for the buck.

CHris asked me what the 950 tops out at......."about 200k" I said

He thought about it for a few seconds then replied....." Yeah, u still mightbe a little faster then"

Thats a lot of gear to pull.....I actually went the other way and geared mine down.

It will easily pull to redline in high gear now, but its topped out at 171 kms/hr....on GPS, the speedo says more like 182.

Indeed I just got an e-mail from schintz racing giving me the news about Cary's death. They have suspended all machining untill further notice. Hopfully they can sell me the kit and the valves and I can get the good people at Mongoose machine to do the nessesary work. Cary's passing is a major bummer for all KLR owners everywhere. Damn.

He was a great man, and its hard to believe he is gone.

Just last week I chatted to him on the phone.

He was not only brilliant, but extremely kind and generous to.

I have bought lots of stuff from him, and had him do some machine work for me over the years, spoke on the phone several times....but I never had the honour of meeting him.

I will miss him greatly.

Yes...very sad news on Cary. I had also talked to him about a week ago.

As for the big bore....685 or 705?? with the 685 you just bore the existing cylinder to a larger size (making it thinner) to fit the larger piston. With the 705 you replace the sleeve with a new heavier sleeve (read better than oem). In the long run for reliability and life span I went with the 705. You can descide for your self. Vibration is noticeably down and hp/torque is up:tup:. I stuck with the stock head, just cleaned things up a bit. Incase you hadn't figured it out yet I am going for driveability as this is my daily driver. I didn't want to go to far and then always be fiddlin' or fixin'. If I wanted to work on it all the time I would just buy a KTM.....OOPPS...was that out loud:spl:..LOL. Hopefully next week I will have it back on the dyno to get the results of the $$ spent.

Chris.

When you buy a KTM you don't have to spend extra thousands to scrounge up some HP. :mb:

Even with the extra bucks spent I'm still about $2000 less than a 640 :hf:. That leaves enough for HID driving lights, luggage etc.:clap:Maybe even a little adventure trip if I play my cards right with the wife......or maybe not :wi:.

Hey,

Thanks for the info. I think I'll try the 705. I too ride my klr as primary transport to and from work. I've logged 25,000km in the past 15 months. I'm 220+ lbs and a little extra hp will sure help on the hwy. I'm going to add a 16 tooth counter shaft sprocket to help keep the revs down at 120kph(5,000rpm). Mrs. Booger gave me the green light to spend the dough :dr:so hopefully shintz racing continues to service KLR's despite Cary's untimely passing. All I need is the parts. The good people at Mongoose machine in Port Coquitlam have been working miracles for me for over 20 years. Sure interested in the dyno results when you get them.

Greg.

And the numbers are: STOCK...37hp..35ft lbs torque. 705 KIT...47hp..45ft lbs torque.:tup:Was it worth it......YES.

thanks,
705 kit is on it's way. I'll get mongoose to do the machining. I got Shintz to adjust their pricing and 499.95 and it's done deal. Can't wait.

Ok, all this snow stuff has made this everyday rider stir crazy. Mongoose has my parts. Old sleeve was oval, thus the oil consumption. Machine shop guy and klr owner claims that it probably was messed from the factory. Also running a motor too cold will prematurely put a cylinder out of round as well as stressing the oiling system. My temp gauge never gets past 1/4 except in traffic. The stock thermostat opens at 165 degrees instead of 190. Google thermo bob for details. He suggested the thermo bob. I've ordered one. I'm going with the stock head but having the intake matched to the carb mount for smoother flow and the valves and seats reground. After the top end is reassembled and before it leaves my shop I'll throw in the new balancer chain adjuster(doohicky). The 2008 comes with some air pump pollution control crud that makes the head pipe glow like a cherry and backfire on decompression. Two more pounds of crap for the trash. I'll keep ya posted. Hating the snow.
