I found my relay... sorta... Damn thing is under the tank... meaning I'll have to take the tank off JUST to get to the damn thing... urf... I think I'll just wire something up, forget this :mad3:
The tank comes off really easy, all you have to do is pull the seat and then there are just two bolts holding the tank on (don't forget to turn the petcock off and disconnect the fuel line). I can have mine off in less than five minutes.

Got it off... urf, stupidly organized bike. Wouldn't it make MORE sense to have ALL the relays and fuses in one convenient place? :?

I've seen plenty of new batteries that do not get properly charged when new. Put a voltmeter on it and make sure you are getting 13 plus volts. If not trickle charge it and test it again.

I spent more years than I care to admit in the bike business. Like Sparkle says, most problems like this are caused but the battery. Easy test is to revthe engine when the signals stop flashing. This is often enough to step up the voltage and get the relay working again. If that occurs trickle charge your new battery. Often bike charging systems simply can't run lights, signals etc and charge a battery at the same time. Don't ask why, probably engineers or cost accountants.

If it's the relay go buy an "electronic' or variable relay from NAPA. Variable load (resistance) flasher units are available for a pittance (<$5). Besides the low price, the other benefit of using for a generic electronic flasher relay is that external conditions do not determine flashing speed, which is electronically and internally regulated by the relay assembly. In fact, the "variable load" designation means that the flasher will function with different wattage bulbs, variations in circuit resistance, etc.

We used to do this on old Jap bikes because the stock flashers only worked either within the warranty period or for 30 feet or 30 seconds whichever came first and cost about 25 bucks.

This bike is just causing me one problem after another >_>

I got the signals working, but the god damn tank bolt sheered! Gah!

Oh well... guess it's back to the shop... It's ONLY money right?

I'm seriously debating axing all ties to Yamaha after this.... Husqvarna or Suzuki anyone? >_>

I guess that it just depends on which one you buy, how the previos owner treated it and your own skill level.

My XT 350 hasnot caused me much frustration and even though it's for sale I kinda hope that it doesn't sell, I have become quite attached to it. Good luck on the repairs! :hb:
Just saying that I am sure that not all Yamahas are bad.

Oh no, Yammies are usually good, I'm thinking the previous owner just put an inferior bolt in... Upon inspecting the bolt, it's been on it's way out for quite a while, the break wasn't "fresh", so I guess I sorta lucked out in having it break at home and not while on a ride right? But yeah, the bike is going back in the shop tomorrow... Urf... :mad3:

Ok, I managed to back the broken bit of the bolt out, replaced it with an industrial strength threaded pin, the bike will break before the bolt holding the tank down does *mwaha* :p

Now, all i have to make is that tail rack and I'll be set lol

So was it a broken relay????
Just curious was it a screwed relay??

Screwed is putting it mildly... this things wasn't even a relay anymore, it looked like it had been "repaired" once before, I thought I'd seen everything, but that took the cake. Sadly, no pictures, tossed it before I had thought about cataloging it... oh well

Turn signals are working fine now... at low RPMs... now at the higher rpms they start flashing faster and faster and eventually stop (or flash so fast I can't tell the difference)

Should I have gone with the 14$ electronic relay instead of the 3.58 standard one? I went to pacific yamaha and they told me an OEM replacement is 78$

Thanks for the discussion and repair manual link guys, the signals on my XT350 aren't working at all either. Currently my bike is off the road but I have been tinkering around a bit in the garage. It's funny, for all summer long I was riding without my speedo working as a result of it being seriously busted up on a crash and only attached to my bike by the wire...going bumpitty bump bump when riding off road. No matter how beaten it was, I just jammed that black cable thing back in the speedo and presto: it works!

I like the fact that my XT just keeps on ticking no matter its quirks.

I've finally gotten all the little quirks worked out. Turns out the 3.50$ turn signal solenoid I got from "Canadian" Tire* didn't have enough resistance and was getting over loaded, a simple fix with a full electronic 10$ solenoid, flashers are working perfectly now.

I've also added a windshield and a tail rack =3

*Canadian in quotation marks because the only thing "Canadian" about them is the currency they use. No metric bolts my ass :mad3:

No broken bolts this time... though I did have to modify how the turn signals are attached at the back... I can pick my bike up from the rack along X3
