Ever since I bought my BMW 1150GS I’ve been using mobile-1 15-50w synthetic oil.

This last oil change left me scrambling when I wasn’t able to locate that weight at any of my regular sources: super-store, wall-mart, Canadian tire. In frustration I picked up regular 10-30 but worry it may be too light.

Anybody know if this weight has been discontinued, or know od another source?

Thanks

About a year ago Mobil-1 (RedCap) 15-50 was reformulated
and repackaged using a GoldCap. I also use Mobil-1 15-50
redcap for my bikes and have noticed it becoming hard to find. Usually got it from Canadian Tire/Wally Mart and only
finding it in litre size.

I can only assume old stock is disappearing and we'll soon
see the goldcap version. If not, I'll need to look into changing brands.

Thanks for your response. I’ve been to all these places and have been unable to locate this weight.

I don’t know what the difference is between red and gold cap formulation but I’d be happy with either.

Is there any alternate reasonably priced synthetic that would be suitable?

Try the Maxima. Been available for bikes in the USA for decades. It has all the approval stamps on it especially the JASO which is a European standard that my KTM calls for.

Hey guys. I have an 1100gs and have always run 20-50 in it. I have tried many different brands and have found the bike to work best with Amzoil. After my bike was broken in 60,000km I found it would "use" oil if I put in 15/50W. I only use the 20/50 now and the bike will only "use" about 1/2 a litre for 10,000km. The bike has about 130,000km now and runs as well as ever.

P.S. I thought I would be smart and run 5/50 full synthetic once. The oil is too thin and the bike smoked like hell. I never even left the shop and had to drain the oil and put in 20/50. So I would say you should chuck the 10/30 and don't even think about putting it in you beemer. Rocke

Thanks for all your advice, but its too late I’ve already changed the oil & filter with the only oil I could find, Mobile-1 10-30W and being a synthetic its far too expensive to dump.

So far it seems to be running fine, no smoke, and no noticeable consumption, maybe slightly noisier tappets?

I know that you have changed your oil already however for next time try the Superstore in the Guildford area on 104 Avenue & 146 Street. I was in there on the weekend and they had the 15-50 Mobil 1.

Thanks for the tip but they were all gone by the time I got there. Should be able to stumble across some in time for my next oil change.
