Ashcroft/Kamloops Area - Barnes Lake to Wallachin

Hey,

I am looking ahead to summer and trying to plan some routes. One I am interested in includes a stretch (5.5km) between the Barnes Lake road down to Wallachin. I would really like to be able to include a loop from Merritt, Spences Bridge up the Kirkland Ranch Road then down to Wallachin then up Deadman Vidette. My girlfriend and I have Kawi Versys 300 bikes so not the most dirt worthy machines. We were on the Barnes road a couple years back and I was going to explore the route but it was raining and it got really greasy and we had to turn back.

I have attached a link to a KML that shows the route I am interested in knowing the state of. From the imagery it looks like it may not be that bad.

I am just putting this out there in case anybody on here knows the route and can give me some insight into the state of the road and the difficulty. Thanks for any info you can provide.

very nice county to ride in, (on?). Motoged has a route we usually doo a coupla times a year from there in the Loops. across greenstone to Savona to Wallachin across to Barnes to the pavement to Sundance ranch and follow along on the east side of the Thompson river all the way to a terrific burger n beer at the Log Cabin pub in Spences Bridge.
I wouldn't ride it on my 300 but would happily ride it on your 300.
opting out of the greenstone section would decrease the ride rating using the Goldwing rating system, that is: The higher the number on a scale of five, higher the chances that a Honda Goldwing that would get damaged riding on a given road. (are you listening Lars?)
For Example, the Da'rcy Shalalth high line road ranks (in my old eyes) as a solid 4, as in 4 out of 5 goldwings WiIL get damaged or more to the bikes at hands kawi 300's. crossing greenstone would rank a 5,, the across top from barnes to wallachin about a 1.
Very scenic ride across some wide open flat lands with views of the mtns west towards Pavillion, Cornwall and further to the coastal range, and there's some forested sections to mix it up. Be on the ball if it is wet, there would be some very greasy sections.

You're in luck...we did that section last year.
From Barnes Lake to Pennie Lake is not too bad although, as mentioned...it can get REALLY greasy.
The section from the small pond that is called "Separating Lake" on Google Earth, over to the Wallachin side can have DEEP snow until June....and once the snow is gone, there are some HUGE mudholes. Bring some rescue-gear/ropes...you may very well need them.
It's not a long stretch of road, but it can be an ugly one.
Wherever it is wet, it will be extremely slick and slippery.

For some reason, I can't upload a .gpx file.

It's a short ride...maybe 1 km...but it can be a very muddy ride. The downhill portion to Wallachin is quite rough, but if I can make it, I'm sure you can.
Another option, depending on where you want to go, is to continue past Pennie Lake and follow the road all the way down to Savona. That route was on our radar, but there was a family crisis at home and we had to leave a day early.

Thanks everyone. For some reason I was not getting any notifications of action on the thread. I appreciate the intel.

I am heading to Lillooet tomorrow. I might still check this route out but since I am going solo now I might not push it. We'll see!
