I'll looking at buying a gps for offroad use and I was wondering what kind of feedback or experiences anyone has had and suggestions for the best type to buy. I'm also looking for suggestions on handlebar mounts.

I want to be able to put off road maps and primarily use it for dirtbiking but also be able to use it in my car.

Garmin 60CSx from www.gpscentral.ca is perfect for the bike. Waterproof and rugged.

If you come ride the Loose Screw Dual Sport, we are raffling off 2 of these with bike mounts and topographical maps.

I would get a different one for the car that will talk to you and is touchscreen.

Most use a Ram mount on the bars. Been abusing my 60csx with Ram mount for a few years and no problems yet.

Bora has younger eyes than some of us! The map 76 csx has the same guts as the 60,the buttons are easier to get to(i find) on the fly and there bigger as well. I can scroll through my gps when i hit a smooth patch of trail/road and operate it with my left hand with gloves on. The ram mount and cradle is as bomb proof as anything i have seen. Oh 1 more thing the 76 is waterproof and it floats. That could be very handy if your a waterhole kind of guy.

+1 re cactusreid's post. 76csx can be found for barely any more than the 60xxx series (YMMV). Both discontinued and being cleared out.

And the 76 does not have the aerial sticking out waiting to be torn off by the front brake line or whatever else may snag it.

I looked at 76 and prefer the 60 - buttons below screen works better IMHO

+1 for ram mount
Ibycus ( I have 2.1 ) gives great off road coverage for the price ( ;-) )

If I were to buy a new one today - IT WOULD HAVE A MUCH BIGGER SCREEN THAN ANY OF THE CURRENT GPS ON THE MARKET. THE ZUMO'S LOOK COOL,BUT THEY ARE PRETTY SPENDY. i'd like a motorcycle gps with a screen about the size of a fishfinder!

I like my Garmin Oregon 450 for all round use. It has a touch 1.53"W x 2.55"H (3.8 x 6.3 cm); 3" diag screen and 240 x 400 pix display. http://www.gpscentral.ca/products/garmin/oregon-450.html Starts at $330 but maps and car mount etc add up.

The new Montana gets a slightly bigger screen and it is supposed to be better in bright sunlight. The Oregon isn't great in the sun (but I live on the Wet Coast)!

My dream GPS is the Garmin ZUMO 765 which doesn't exist yet. Ditch the XM traffic (and shed the extra $200) from the 665 and give it voice-activated navigation.

The Garmin Nuvi 550 is your best bet right now. Good all-rounder for $219. http://www.gpscentral.ca/products/garmin/nuvi550.html

The Zumo will die in offroad situations with silt and gloves...ask me how I know. It was a great car/street bike GPS though.

The 60CSx can be had cheap enough at www.gpscentral.ca that you can pickup a cheap car GPS and still be less money than a Zumo.

Oruxmaps app -- incredibly powerful and 100% free, assuming you have an android phone to run it on...

Used it on my Nexus S for over 800km a few weeks ago and it was absolutely fantastic. The true GPS (non cell-based) in the nexus was as accurate as any I've used, Oruxmaps imported my track waypoints from google earth, and cached maps from google maps and google earth, or any other map dbase you can find online.

Only problem is the nexus S is not extremely rugged, but it is incredibly lightweight and thin (fit nicely in a pocket). I'm working on a bar mount based on a pelican case with clear cover.

Incredibly versatile and cheap alternative to buying yet another gadget!

Cheers

a gps is the way of the doo doo bird. just like pagers, 8 tracks, beta,cd's, etc.

some of the new smartphones make use of actual satellite triangulation asper the first generation of cell tower triangulation. I believe the Iphone 4G and some blackberries uses actual cell tower within a network but can go satellite triangulation when out of range. it's way of the future. my Iphone 3GS does not have this feature and the only reason I still have it is cause I'm waiting forthe contract to run out.

only down side of these smartphones still is there in their infancy ofdevelopment and not waterproof.

In about 5-10 years gps use for recreational activities will be part of yournew smartphones.

You will still have standalone GPS for the guy's that like to carry a brickon their handlebars and marine and aviation applications.

Not picking a fight here, but smartphones these days are just city slicker toys. My iphone is packed full of features but it seems to make room for all these toys they decided to ditch the antenna because my cell service here in 'loops sucks. I don't see how these things are going to replace anything useful anytime soon. Some of us might have a brick strapped to their bars but at least the brick will have reception. Also, have you used you iphone as a gps yet? I did, it sucked the battery dry in just over 3 hours, not to mention that it gets so hot when using it as a gps it shuts itself off unless its out in the air to cool down. As you pointed out though, it's not waterproof.

Bora, gpscentral is out of the 60csx fyi.
