Riders,

Any Gsers out there???? Riding in the Kamloops area offers a lot of adventure for any GS riders...or any other Beemer that you want to ride.

Drop me a note if you are interested in hooking up for rides next season (after April/05)

Ged, that R80 is a great bike. I know I can't afford it right now, maybe you could send me a pic anyways. Wasn't Helge Pedersen's bike "Olga" the same year/model?

Paul,

Boy, have you got good eyesight !!!:)))

Apparently since then someone stole this logbook...That was a good trip w/ six othe GSers...three shocks wrecked between Puertocitos and Gonzaga Bay.

I am going back in Feb w/ the 450 KTM and travel with a small pack and a few friends for 1-2 weeks if the plan comes through.

Cheers

You should read Helge's book, you will get a new appreciation for the old BM.

That bike is in the BMW museum in Germany, they bought it from him for $1 (US). They also sold him a new 1150GSA for a $1 (US)...

I attach two pictures, Helge's current bike, Helge on an Elephant (2003)

Motoged,

I know Laura, Wayne etc well even Rick and Erica although I believe they are single again...?

Yep, Africa was cancelled due the Russia crash.

Mike has now lost his legI believe, I feel bad for him, great guy, rode two trips through Southern Africa with him. He use to ride a tricked out F650 Dakar TT39, very cool bike, I was on the 1150 GS in 2002. In 2003 he tookhis very tricked out GS1150, same bike he crashed in Russia I believe....?

Maybe next year.

I am actually going down to Laura's in a few weeks. How do you know them?

Cheers

Willie,

I know these folks through my own efforts to run GS tours in BC. In 1999I organized the "BC Canyons Tour" which took us from Kamloops through Deadman Creek Valley, Ashcroft to Spences Bridge on the east side of the thompson, over to Pavillion and Kelly Lake, over the Fraserat Big Bar, over China Head to Tyax Lodge, over to Shalath and along the Highline toDarcy and back to Lillooet on 99....fed them breakfast and supper and lugged their stuff.....and in 2000, I operated a 6 day tour , The Hotsprings Tour from Kamloops over the Monashee to Halcyon Hot Springs and up along Trout Lake and down through Kaslo to Ainsworth Hot Springs, and over Balfour Bay ferry and Grey's Pass to Invermere, WhiteSwan Provinvial Park (hotsprings).....and this timeI fed them three meals a day!!!!!!

The project was a labour of love...the first year I charged about $200 US (and lost thousands)....the next year charged about twice that....and the third year set up a 8-10 day tour that was to be similar to the first one with additional routes and activities (rafting, Whistler...) and charged what it was worth....and that price was still half what other outfits were charging for weenie tours....one person signed up so I cancelled.

So I gave it up and have focussed on dirtbiking mostly since....and have organized some annusl alpine rides out of Goldbridge as a friends only trip that is a bring your own type of monumental event in mid-August.

I still ride the 1100 on rough stuff, but am trying to save it for a longer touring career with some gravel here and there.

the 800G/S is done up to be the weekend roughstuff tourer....

and I want to sell a '93 Husqvarna 350 for $2800 (primo deal) to help pay off the KTM loan ;))

That's how I know those folks....the Seattle BMW gang is my BMW connection aside from a few BC buds.....

I had a very pleasant time with Laura and her friend a Lin on the Routledge run this year. We blazed some new trails down the coquihalla canyon (inside joke). Nice folks! Total motorheads for sure, I look forward to riding with them again. :D

Yep,

Lin and Laura were up at Tyax this summer...w/ Cheryl and another GSer, Jonathan Simon.....Rick was stopped at the border and wasn't allowed to cross....probably figured he was a terrorist or something.

I stopped in at Touratech and saw Lin and some of the Tyax pictures in August. Looks like it was a wicked ride! So many rides, so little time...same old story.

Ged,

We should chat at some stage.....

....I am doing a "user friendly" Arctic trip in May 05 (already 10 bikes).

I would like to do more here locally because last year I went to Africa 6 times with all kinds of tours (4x4 and bikes), was too much. My wife is great in this respect but I was also feeling the strain. My trips with Helge was 40 days at a time, too much.

We charged Helge and he charged clients about US$9000 for the month in Africa, includes shipping the bikes from Seattle to Cape Town and back in a 40' container. Note this excluded your own flights...very pricy but a great trip though.

I have been making a living doing what I love but it gets to you if you do too much though. This year we took it easy, only two trips to Africa and one down south. Next year 2 trips, one big 4x4 trip and one nice 3 week bike trip in Northern Namibia. Actually Laura and some of the others on the 2003 trip with Helge has expressed genuine interest in doing this area in question. Fantastic riding but no Hotels or Lodges, eliminates the unwanted.

I have done a lot of driving and riding in BC but not nearly as much as I want to, would like to do it with friends rather than work.

We are organizing a training session in June 05 for big duel sports on our 4x4 training track, watch this space.....

Cheers

Maybe it's all those years watching Paris-Dakar, or maybe its the trade-mission my father went on to Kenya when I was a boy.I have always dreamt of seeing Africa, and one day I will. My favourite movie is "Out of Africa" for a bunch of reasons, but I really am in love with Africa and I have never been there. Crazy. There's something there that has captured my imagination for a long time.

Judging from how busy you have been, hooligan, I am not alone in this.

Anyways, I'm good to go for BC rides pretty much whenever (curse of the self employed). I'm a father of two young kids, so I like to keep the local trips short and save the "away" time for the major trips.

It would be nice to sit down for a chin-wag sometime, I'd love to hear about your travels. Single-malt reimbursements for each story, of course.;)

Cheers!

640, Sounds like a plan, I love to talk about Africa.

I have pretty much covered sub saharan Africa from top to bottom east to west a few times.

You should yoin us when we do Namibia, I plan on doing a real dual sport ride in the Kaokoveld area. Been to it lots of times but only once on a bike...great area for duel sport bikes. I will definately take the KTM on that one and not theGS1150. To give you an idea, when BMW launched the new 1200GS they considered this area but it was I suspect to hostile ofthe 1200ride, also no Hotels....

You got me thinking now....

Same here, two young kids, main reason for scaling back the long trips. I am now governed to two long trips a year.

Send me a PM and we can get together....
