charging system failed?

2000kms on my new '06 KLR

riding on a hot day, climbing forest service roads. Stopped...no start.

Battery charged down, lights dimm.

bumped it and drove home.

checked wiring harness, then slow charged the batterie.

waited about 20 hours.

checked across the batterie, 13.5 volts. Started it, 13.5 volts, revved it, same same.

Regulator/rectifier is quite hot. Stater leads (3 yellow ones) show 5 volts on each of 2 of them and nothing on the middle one.

Same reading at the plug between the stater and the regulater/rectifier.

Whats the prognosis Doc? Am I missing something?

Residual damage from cracking the cases?:)

KLRMan had charging problems on his new bike. Bad batch of rectifiers?

What u need to do is have a load on the charging system while the engine is running or ride it arround for a while and re check the batterie voltage. If the charge in the batterie is up at 13.5 volts and the charging system is not working you may not notice that it's not charging due to not having much power drawn out of the batterie. Run it with your headlight on HI, and run it untill your cooling fan cuts in and see what the voltage reading is at that point. If it is charging with all that load on the system the voltage reading should hold at about 12.5 volts (I think that wasthe voltageI read in another KLR charging problem,and I think it was a 2006 also). If the voltage keeps droping then "Huston we have a problem"

Check your ground leads also.

On that link that Joker posted...if you can get through our jokes on that link, it ended up being a bad Regulater/Rectifier. New one shows 14.5 volts at 3000 rpm or so off the battery. Checked the battery regularly and it is never losing volts now, so the new Regulator worked!
