It usually wouldnt even idle or run on lower throttle if it was flooding so I doubt anything has been going on before this episode.
This is the fate of all carbs at one time or another, dont blame the bike! It will be fine.

Sort of off topic. Re 'BCAA is your friend'. I don't disagree but do keep in mind your insurance policy. For example, my insurance is with Megson Fitzpatrick who "will provide up to $100 to cover the cost of emergency road service made necessary by the disablement of your vehicle".
BCAA may provide more but do look at your insurance. You're already paying for it.

Update.
Received a carb rebuild kit from ProCycle. Put all the pieces in as instructed, replaced ALL O-rings, although none were that bad - this bike has just over 10,000 km.
Cleaned and cleared all passages and jets.
Started the same trip (that left me stranded last time) and this time instead of a flooded airbox, it feels as though I'm running out of fuel! Set the float level as per the BST Bible...but in the upper RPM's there is a distinct surge.
Got home and reset the float level as per the manual...no difference.
Fuel delivery from tank is about 19 - 20 oz pe r minute, so fuel delivery isn't an issue.
There is no sputtering, so I don't think it's an ignition issue.
She starts and idles fine...pulls good, but there is a definite surging in the higher RPM's...and I am nearing the end of my rope.
If this keeps up, there could be a DR for sale...

A measure of success...

I've added three 5/16" washers as a pre-load for the slide spring and this seems to have gotten rid of the problem. I also covered about 1/3 of the cutout in the airbox, so I can't say for sure which is responsible for the improvement...maybe both!
I also added some closed-cell foam along the front edge of the cutout, to isolate the breather filter.
I think I'll add another washer...
