DRZ /KLX 400 creek proof?

I was thinking about the vent tube on the left side of the carb.

Mine seems to vent to the outside and I thought that it might be prone to taking in water. I took some 5/16 i.d hose and ran it back into the airbox beside the filter but all I got from that was a high speed miss.

I wonder if the extra length of the hose won't allow the slide to vent properly.

Am I worried for nothing? I don't want to flood out my bike in a water crossing and hold people up.

Just approach the water crossing in the full up wheelie position thereby gaining an extra foot or so of carby elevation;);). Stands to reason though that as long as your bike is running and not getting water in the airbox all should be good ???

Isuspect that there is a slight vacuum in the airbox, probably throwing the vacuum diaphragm off a little under higher load situations, remember the diaphragm needs to "see" atmospheric pressure, you could try routing your vent up under the tank somewhere along the top tube of the frame.

Not that I have ever swamped my Z, but it could happen.... someday.

BTW the Z airbox really isn't very watertight, splash resistant, yes, but not watertight. No gasket.... at least not on mine.

It has only happened twice that I went into a mud bog and sunk my bike in what seemed like up to the seat. One timeI stalled because the rut I rode into ended in a vertical wall. The bike stood on its own and I had to yard it out vertically.

Just last week Irode into a seemingly shallow mud section and this time when I sensed negative G, I rolled the throttle to the stop and mainly due to my crisp new knobby, climbed out of it, barely. All I saw was a red/brown wave come over the barsas I was diving in.

What I am trying to do here with this mod is to prevent a problem from the things I don't plan.

Thanks to Cedartree, I understand that this vent tube only displaces air from the movement of the slide in the carb body.

I am going to experiment today with the longer tube out of the airbox and see if I still get that high speed gag. I'll let you know.

I think that as long as the stock tube can drain easily there is probablynot an issue.

Actually , I pulled my carb to clean and inspect and this vent tube breathes directly into the float bowl.

I also left the long tube out into the open and experienced no high speed miss.

I stand corrected... on both counts, :shoot:I cycled the slide up and down a few times when I had the carb off, and it seemed like there was air being displaced out of the tube of which we speak,AND while cleaning my air filter last week after the dusty West Coast RideI noticedthat there is a press in place gasket of some kind on the side cover, though I'd be curious to see how watertight it really is.
