So, I am thinking about getting a Baja Designs dual-sport kit for my KLX400R but want to know about registering in BC. Anybody gone through this process?

ICBC reaaally wants the original purchase invoice, to prove you own the bike. After that you need to get a provincial inspection at a ICBC "certified" shop, typically $100.

Note: You do not need indicators to pass, but if your bike has indicators they must work.

How about speedometer, according to the Baja website the kit does not come with a speedo.

You require a speedo with a non resetable odometer

Your headlight must stay on with the engine not running

DOT high low beam

High beam indicator

DOT tires

Licence Plate Light

DOT Tail lamp

TT

Check out www.northstarmotosport.com and look under K&S they have some of the electrical stuff you need then check under Acerbis they have the headlamp and tail lamp you need then Mitas there you will find the Tires.

After all that PM me with the parts you want and I will get you the best possible price

Yes turn indicators. Mainlyit was a side noteabout not needing turn indicators, but of course you will still need all the rest of the DOT kit you were talking about.

But I have to be different. I will do something, just don't know what yet, but it will be faster than the KLRs:mb:

Yeah, the KLRs are kinda slow, but they usually get there before the pub closes. If you find something exciting with a little more balls , please let me know.

Sounds like you already have something faster on the gnarly sections, but if it's any distance we'll get there way ahead of you ( all within the law of course).

Anyway, at our advanced age we need the good workout a klr gives you.

Shut up leadsled.

What the hell?? The HL on my XT350 doesn't run unless the bike is running..... Is this just for newly reg'd DS or is my XT non-compliant? I don't really give a **** what ICBC says, just wondering.

Hey Tom do you mean headlight must stay on when bike not in motion? 'Cause if the light has to stay on with the motor off then we have a bunch of new R1200RTs to fix!:shoot:

Kind of old thread, but here is my .02

I put a Baja Designs kit on my 1990 DR350

-I had no bill of sale, I've had the bike for about 5 years, bought from a fellow in Victoria that I no longer had any way of contacting. I had to get a notorized letter saying that.

-I passed an inspection with no speedo, or odometer

-Although my bike has a factory VIN on it, ICBC wanted to give it a "BC assigned VIN", meaning I had to take the bike back to the inspection facility and have them install this new VIN plate. I really did not want to do this as I had the bike inspected out of town. I took my papers to a friend in the insurance biz and he was able to get the computer to accept my factory VIN and allow me to insure.

Your results may vary. :)

Hey Loren...or anyone else for that matter, keep in mind I am a licensed BC motor vehicle inspector including motorcycles, so I can test your bike..

kind of an old topic but i need some advice here.
i have just bought a 01 suzuki DRZ400E and need to get a few mods done on it to make it street legal.

actually, it has been registered already but not sure how it passed as the story is the original owner registered it pretty much the same as i bought the bike from the 2nd owner (no high beam indicator, no high-low beam switch, no signals, no horn and not DOT tires on it).

anyways, i need to get my drivers license with this bike so i am wondering if the person giving the exam will look over my bike and see if it is actually legit? i was thinking i would do these mods anyways just in case of DOT road inspections, etc. so, right now i need to know what exactly is required to make it legit so i dont get hassled.

i assume the following from the above responses:

- high-low DOT headlight with a switch and a high beam indicator. the HL has to work while in gear or while the engine is not running?
- DOT taillight and license plate light
- DOT tires

these are still gray areas:

- speedo?
- horn?
-mirror?
- turn indicators?

recommended dealers for these parts would be apprecited!

thx for any input...see you on the trails/steets?

When you take the test I would think your bike has to be street legal, most likey I would think the MV office would ask you for certifcation on the bike. So all of the above except the turn signals.

Hi All,

Well now I'm really confused, I am DS'ing an '06 450 EXC and my headlight is only on with the engine running, I have put turn signals on it, the dealer told me I had to, new headlight, Acerbis Cyclope. I think that my odometer is resetable but I am not sure, I do know it has an hour meter that is not resetable but I am not too sure about the odo. The dealership is an inspection station so maybe all this doesn't matter. DOT tires, mirror, horn, I hope that's everything. Oh yeah, how about the licence plate, can I just bolt it to the fender so it is pointing at the sky or do I need to fashion some kind of bracket to keep it more vertical?

  1. Forget about the headlight on while not running thing, but good safety advise is that if you are on a road/trail at night and your bike dies - turn on your right signal so people coming up behind can see you.
  2. Signals, although optional, are aGREAT idea if you are going to ride this thing in traffic. Most dumb drivers don't remember the arm signals, and they will kill you to remind you of that fact.
  3. The odometer on your EXC is not resettable. The tripmeters are.
  4. The plate mounting was not a problem for the cop that came over to where me and my buddy had just parked and checked our insurance and "ran our plates" last week. We both have them ty-wrapped onto our rear fender/turn signals "pointed at the sky". YMMV (your mileage may vary)
Free advice to others

If you are buying a brand new bike from the dealer, tell them you want to dualsport and put a plate on it (eventually) and ask that an insurance person be on hand when you pick up the bike to do the new vehicle registration. Then all you have to do is make it street legal, go to any insurance office and buy your insurance and pick up a plate. No inspections.

Keep in mind you're responsible for the bike's street legalness, and if you were to have an accident you would probably void your insurance coverage if you hadn't properly added your street items as req'd by law. Say you got rear ended and you hadn't installed a brake light - duh!! :mb:

Good luck!

Well it's my time to reactivate this old thread.

I have a 2001 DRZ400E that I'd like to DS, but I've got paper problems:
#1 - The original owner was not given a NVIS.
#2 - It appears they no longer have the original receipt.

The previous owner is calling the selling dealer about getting a copy of the original bill of sale, but who knows how far that will go. If they don't have any luck, am I S.O.L?

I'd ask my local ICBC, but they are so uptight that a notorized letter from Harper himself wouldn't be enough.
When the time comes I'll have to do it in Victoria, Duncan or Nanaimo.
