F650gs Dakar valve check

I recently picked up an 06 dakar that is coming up on the 10k km service. I am able to do e everything myself other than check the valves. Do I have any options other than the bmw dealership? I am thinking they will charge me my first born.

I would imagine your valves adjustment would require shims {bucket over shim}....

So to check the valves, any shop could do that but if an adjustment is required then the proper size shims would be required to complete the task.... Now it could be that your bike has the same size shims as Japanese brands in which case your laughing... Or it's a special size only available through BMW/Rotax...... You could probably find this out by going to F650.com and doing some research...

I wouldn't think it would be too costly if you just had the Beemer shop just check the valves and you do the rest of the service..... 1 HR @ $90 should be max and the $5 or$10 charge for shop supplies.....

That being said the valves are going to be within spec 99.9% of the time. I put 53,000KM on Dakars and the valves were always within spec and that includes a Baja run with Tom.

If you have warranty on the bike, you can do everything yourself as long as you don't open the engine or mess around with the wiring.

Also, I don't remember them doing anything witht the valves on my 10000km service.

If you don't have warranty then you might be able to save some bucks doing it yourself.

I had the 10k service done on my X challenge at Pac. BMW and they checked the valves and did adjust them with shims. With the rest of the service the time came to 2 + hrs.you couldgive them a call and askfor an estimate. Steve

I just talked to a kid at John Valk and he quoted me $400 for the 10K service and another $400 for the valve check and adjustment.

That seems like a super deal. :spl:

The hourly rate must be close to $400 per, seems a little steep... Did you buy the bike through them?

You're forgetting...it's a BMW.....been there done that, now I am "ready to race"...way cheaper to maintain and run....and itcomes withthe XL rims.

Enjoy the bike, but have the owners manual and dealers number handy, Beemers are not cheap to keep...:tup:

I think there was confusion somewhere as the 10,000KM service is about 2.5-3 Hrs and a valve adj shouldn't add more than an hour to that.

But the question is probably moot:

The service data for the 650 single has been updated several times since the bike was introduced. BMW is very conservative with intervals at first, but as they collect more data they update the service manuals. Originally the spec was to check at 1,000KM, then it was relaxed to 10,000KM, and now it's due at 30,000KM initially and every 20,000KM there after.

That's because your 950 has a 2 hour book rate for an oil change. I guess it takes that long to remove all the bodywork, change the two oil filters , the mesh screen, and purge the air from the oil system andfill it with $70 of synthetic oil?

Or is it the 5 hours to adjust the valves?

Yeah that sounds cheaper

Don't forget that Valk is the guy that charges DOUBLE the labour rate if your bike was imported from the U.S.
Worst BMW dealer I have ever had to deal with. He is one of the reasons I no longer own a BMW or will ever own one again.

That's too bad man, when I went to Pac Yam BMW the salesman was a d-bag but that was in '05, he's not around anymore,other then that they have been good for service. I've never tried Valk.

I thought I would add that I didnt plan to 'pan' John Valk BMW in my post. I dont have enough dealings with them yet to go there. I am sure others have had some good experiences.
