Frustrating Tank Squeak?

Have an 06 KLR 650. I must be stupid because I pulled my tank of 3 times and can't find this annoying squeak that never lets up from idle all the way up. All I know is that when I ride, the only way to stop the squeak is to put my fingers in the front of the tank between the main upper frame and pull up. The squeak gets louder and louder as the rpm rises and it is like a rubbery squeal. I put some tape on my round tank mounts in front and things like that, but it never stopped it. Anybody else have this problem?

I can even hear the squeal with the wind blowing in my face. It is pretty loud. It is like many little birds chirpping all together at once in a high pitch type of a way.

I thought about that too, but with the engine off and when I hit the gas tank a little with my hand the squeak comes too but it is kind of like trying to find a needle in a haystack unless I'm lucky enough that someone in this forum had the same problem. It's driving me nuts as when I drive by someone, they can hear it too. Very screechy sound as like I am not looking after my bike. Could not find any tell tale rub or scuff marks but something must be rubbing somewhere.

I had the same problem on my KTM640 once. It drove me nuts. It turned out I had tightned the gas tank too tight on the rubber mount. I loosened (unloosened?) it off a bit and no more squeaking. Just a thought.

You know what....that may just be it Ktmken! That would explain why I can't find any signs of any scuff marks anywhere. That is the one place I bypassed every time and did not even occur to me that that would be the problem. Can't wait to get at it this weekend and see if it ends this 2 month assault on my senses. Big thanks for that tip!:clap: On more thought, that must be it as that is the only place where metal would contact metal as the rubber mounts on the rear part of the tank have metal inserts and the bolt if tightened too much would rub against it. I had the same thing happen with my 02 KLR, it turns out that when I checked the valves I wasn't to careful putting the tank back on and where one of the points where the tank hooks on to the fram via those little black bumper, the tank just kinda pushed one of those bumpersoff to the side and when I was on the way to Kamloopsto meet up with joker and a few of the other guys that bumper fell off causing the tank to sit kinda funny and sceek almost non stop till I replaced that bumper.

So take yer tank off andsee if one or more of thoserubbers is a missing.

That makes sense too..thanks! But I just did what Ktmken said and it worked:hf: No more squeal... Was feeling a little down that I nuture this bike so much and could not find that squeak.

Not kidding. I backed off the bolts a little and that did the trick. Whether that relieved some stress somewhere else around the tank I don't know, but it instantly killed the sqeal. Before I was torqing them to specs so I just backed off a little!

My office is 2 blocks from Tim Hortons, so if you are ever in the area just let me know. Coffee, Beer or lunch on me. Killing that squeal was worth Gold.
