Love how they make it seem to have a light weight when ready to ride, but barely enough fuel range to get past the end of the driveway.

If they doubled the tank size it would stillbarely be adequate.....as is, its all but useless.

Also I see no decent way to mount a bigger tank, and where is a rack to strap stuff to.

They need to go fix this pile of junk and make it useable for real riders.:mad3:

Marty - I think you missed this - "The bike is a race bike you can ride to and from the track not so much a dual sport."BMW Nut.
"where is a rack to strap my beerto?"

It's cold out....... I think Marty's having problems getting the KLR going, and is just frustrated.;)

That thing is a race bike ??? :hr::hr::hr:

I bet my little 250 would kill it on a motocross track, so what does it race, Honda Z50's ?:shoot:

Hey,

WOW, a lot of judgement being passed on a machine that no one (around here) has seen in real life !! :wi:

Such a passionate debate !! :mi:

Sorry, maybe i am being too harsh.

Its just that I wasted a lot of money and time buying one of bmws bike a few years ago....it was so poorly made it was a joke.

I lost all faith in their ability to make anything more technical than a paper weight.

Ya I guess its justhard to forget paying a LOT of money for a bike, to only then hardly ever ride it because its always in the shop.

I replaced it with a KLR650, and it was basically bullet proof.

I repalced that KLR with the new for 08 KLR, not totally sue why as the old one still ran great, but it was getting a bit beat up from my riding the crap out of it.

Strange that such a cheap bike got abused fo 51,000 kms and if it quit, it was out of gas.

And the expensive bike broke down constantly, and it was babied in comparison to the much much cheaper Kawi.

It was a lesson though, I learned that bmw has no idea how to build a dualsport bike.

I like it.

A few first thoughts.

1. I think I want a bigger muffler;). Maybe I can get a trailer just to tow the muffler around. Does that make it sprung or unsprung weight?
Sprung or unsprung weight? That would depend, does your trailer have suspension?

It's got the big a** muffler because it's fully Euro III emissions compliant, for the street, and so has a cat inside. There is an off-road pipe available.
2. I don't think I would like to get a rock through that fancy headlight. $$$. It does not look like it would be easy to change it out for something cheap. I do really like the look of the new light. Just not sure of the whole integrated into the fender thing.
Don't have any parts lists for it yet.
It should be interesting to see how this bike stacks up against some very good 450's on the market already. All of the other manufacturers have many years of R and D into the current crop of 450's and I would tend to think it will be hard to catch them right out of the gate.
In the bikes first year it has placed a few times and even won a few european enduro races.
Lets hope that BMW prices this bike at a reasonably level so we all have yet another choice of bikes in the growing market.:clap:
The price is $9,000 + PDI, Freight and taxes. Or $10,640 all in.

The factory mentions that it will take a factory tech 15 minutes to change outthe trick co-axial counter shaft sprocket, but will need to be done less often because of the easier life the chain will have without all the shock loads from the suspension.

The entire frame is made of stainless steel. If you look at the last photo just above the peg area you will see what looks like a strange pattern on the frame. This is actually a welded on strengthener frame protector thingy. (Sorry for getting all technical)

The bikes will be available June 2008.

It has a cable operated clutch. That is building it to a price point. I wonder if the Ohlins is stock? That puts it in another price point.

And that muffler? I guess they want to sell the Akrapovic right out of the gate.

The clutch is running at crank speed not tranny speed so there is much less torque going through it. Maybe it doesnt need to be as hefty. Just a guess at this point though.

I think that this will be a solid BMW bike; with the fuel injection and the small displacement id assume it to get around 80 mpg which is a Little less than 3 liters per 100km....which is range enough for me

also mcfly as it wasstated earlier...this bike is notdesigned to challenge the pinnacle of all bikes ever made (your hallowed KLR) its a full on 98% competition moto-x'er that BMW decided to put lights on and make street legal...notto tour up and down BC's logging roads
