getting back into riding... canada day solo overnight trip to Terzaghi Dam

First post, be gentle.

after a few years of hiatus; covid, few friends with bikes, and fortnine videos convinced me to get back on the 2 wheels. got my 3rd bike in april - a rebuilt status '19 ktm duke 390 with 5000 clicks.

i did say ive been watching a lot of youtubes, so naturally now im a full fledged mechanic so i thought id take on a bit more risk of getting a cheapo small bike, modding/wreching it for the trails.

couple weeks ago - with the help of a very patient friend - we got the bike on the back of my tacoma with a piece of 2x10 (a short 5'2" no less, she barely fits diagonally in the bed with the tailgate up) and took it to jones lake camping. Weather was shit, trails were wet, and while I still got the og metzler slicks on the 17" rims, I was hooked. Riding off the pavement was another beast and boy it was fucking fun. "Some tires, helmet with a visor and goggles were all I need to take my riding to the next level", I thought.

Last day of camping, and after the rain has been pouring for days, I took the bike for the last little rip on the trails before loading it back on my truck, I hit a puddle and went down on my left side. Wasn’t even wearing my gloves.

After getting the bike home, I straightened the levers, readjusted the shifter, and did a deep clean of the bike and deemed the damage minor, more of a harder blow to my ego(and my knuckles) or so I thought …(foreshadowing)

So for canada day weekend, I thought id explore the ol duffy a bit more and go off the less beaten path. No plans, since nowadays you get signal everywhere so I thought id just pack up a tent and a bag and just got on the road. I did plan my first night camp spot though. https://goo.gl/maps/rDHYW6415hoARkEw5 took off just before noon on Friday July 2nd.

The old sea to sky were great as always, but after pemby I took the straight at the T intersection in Mt Currie to D'arcy. Its insane how much traffic dies down after you get off the highways. The trails were not bad all the way to d'arcy, with some amazing views of Anderson lake from above. I took 'er easy and had plenty of water.

After getting to the dam around 6pm (photo here), I turned in the recreation site and set up camp. I do some minor checks on my bike and noticed my oil was low. "weird" I thought, knowing that I topped up just before leaving. After some more poking, I noticed a small crack on my clutch cover on the left side after my small crash at jones. Felt some oil at the crack but wasn’t leaving a puddle. Nothing a bit of JB weld wont fix

No one around, I took an early evening. Around 10pm a party of 3 in a car decided to join me, but they were smart to keep distance to the weirdo with the open tent no fly setup half naked sleeping. There were some loud af crickets.

Next morning around 8 I pack up and was hungry for some mcdonalds breaky. Helmet on, I tap my starter. The engine turns over but stalls. I hit the starter for the second time, third time, sixth time, revs to 2k and stalls. I take my helmet off and start panicking. Oil pressure too low because of the slow leak? I tilt my bike over and still wont see oil in the window. Fuck. I was ready to walk over to the neighbours waking up and asking them to get me a tow truck.

I decided to try a few more times… and give it a bit more twist. She finally starts but is whimpering… I decide to b-line it to lillooet and hope to get some oil to top the baby up enough to get home. shout out to the lillooet lordco (not sponsored).

Now the clutch cover is scabbed with jb weld and im ready to get stranded somewhere else next weekend… anyone wanna join me?

What tires does your bike have on it now then? 17" size front and rear I suppose? Working out for you I would assume as you rode on the Highline past my cabin so you could handle that road for sure. Good write-up, what kind of riding are you looking for?

Awesome! Keep those trip reports coming and some pics of your bike as it goes thru it's evolution would be great!

still got the stock metzler m3 on it. just bought shinko 705s and will put those on soon. id imagine it'll take me a bit further.

as for the type of riding, pretty light gravel is probably what i'll practice my skills on for now. the duke is manageable but does not allow for much riding standing up (im 6'2"). so i'll be mostly riding seated, with some time off the saddle, and building my quad muscles lol

Have a look around for bar risers for that bike. the best ones are offset so they use 4 bolts per side. Short bolts are stronger and you can try them offset forward or toward the rider.

yeah gonna add this to the growing list of mods I will need to do to the bike.

i've had a few more issues pop up with this bike since this trip... kinda kicking myself now for not going for the hypermotard that i almost put an offer on...
