Any new contributions? I wanted to bump this thread up. I checked in getting it stickied to the top, but this forum software is limited in that regard. I don't generally have my gps on my little bike, since it is pretty hard to get lost around here. But that doen's help people who want to make a travel plan...

Hi sector:

When I started this thread I expected there would be an accumulation of gps files and the thread would be fairly active, and stay close to the top....so far, in all these months, there hasn't been a single new submission, and very few downloads of my original tracks. I don't know why that is. Maybe everyone likes to keep their rides secret...or they don't save and record their tracks from their gps.

Last year on another thread OTG made a request to the administrators for a separate place on the forum to creat a database of DSBCgps files:

http://www.dualsportbc.com/forums/view_topic.php?id=6533

In the discussion, vexorg madea suggestion that his site (already specifically set up for gps sharing)was available for DSBC members to share their files.

http://bike.stu.ph

I think this is the perfect place to accumulate gps track files. It hasa map display and you can view the track instantly on a zoomable map, you can easily search the map for tracks in your area,it works with different file types and it could be readily linked to ride reports and track descriptions on the forum. It'seasy to useand has features much better than just randomly posting a gps file. This system may even promote more active gps file sharing.

Just some thoughts....

Sparkle -

I'm on the other end - I'm new to riding, just got my first enduro and have been scouring the net for gpx files and descriptions of rides. I was glad to find this thread as a buddy and I are planning a trip for this mid-May (2010). We were hoping for a detailed gps file of the KVR in and around Castlegar or Grandforks areas, but haven't had much luck. These will offer some alternatives at any rate.

I hope this thread stays alive and thrives. I'll be sure to post anything of interest that we may find.

Happy riding -
Mike

Hi Mike:

I just googled for "kettle valley railway gpx" and "kvr gpx" and came up with some good hits. It seems the quad and bicycle people are more advanced in sharing gpx files, and I'm sure you can dig up what you need.

For exploring new places I often make my own files using

http://www.gpsvisualizer.com/draw/

Just zoom in and draw your proposed route and save to your computer as a gpx. Having a paper map of the trail helps. You can change map formats as you draw which is helpful too.

It's a little tediousclicking ina long route, and if you make a mistake you might have to start over, but it's my favorite easy way....My other method is to draw the route using MapSource, Ozi or GPS Trackmaker and then checking it with a map or on Google Earth. When I do the ride I record the actual track to make any corrections.

We'll be waiting for the report...

What is the Gray Creek route like right now, anyone know (ie it's spring right now)? I'm headed to Calgary from Nelson in a couple days... just learned how to use these GPX files (new to the forum) and looks like it could be a fun way to do part of the trip. Doing it on a KLR 650 with knobbies (70/30 or 60/40 offroad/hwy I think) Thanks

Hello Kootenay riders,

We are going to take a ride from Applegrove to Passmore this weekend. I was wondering if anyone had a GPS track they could send me.
PM me and I will send you my email address.

Thank you

Ken

We were at 7000 ft at Cornwall hills lookout on Saturday. (Dead Zone) There was no snow there, so I am hoping this pass will be clear.

PS: You know you're heading through GRIZZLY country don't you? Will at least one of you have a noisy bike? "Loud pipes save lives" might actually be true in this case! :)

Hi Gang:

Over the years there's been some discussion about the acceptability of posting GPS ride tracks on the DSBC forum with administrators suggesting that including tracks on the forum might lead to legal culpability of the site owners in case of an accident or some other problem such as unintended trespass or posting of data that could compromise fairness in planned events. Rather than deleting my entire postings I've deleted the GPX file attachments on several of my old postings, and replaced them with links to http://bike.stu.ph/rides/index.php which is a much more suitable place for posting GPS files. I still have a few to go which I will upgrade and move sooner or later.

One thing that can greatly help with planning an adventure tour - be it for just a long day through some memorable country, an overnight out and back, or a full fledged multi-day ride - is being able to download the tracks and routes provided by others who have done the ride before. Some of those rides go on to become well known epics - the TAT, for example. And some riders become well known creators of rides.

What is needed is a warehouse containing all these saved routes, preferably in one place, available for searching and downloading. And hopefully, a place where you can upload and share your outstanding rides as well.

The good news is, such a site exists. Several, in fact. Two in particular stand out, both very good, but both with slightly different strengths and weaknesses. So without further ado, here are links to the two sites I use for uploading my tracks for others to download and ride if they wish.

Hopefully, those of you with tracks from your tours, whether it is just a spectacular day ride or a multi-week ride in another country, will contribute to the dual sport ride warehouse.

A handy incidental benefit of these websites is they allow you to embed maps of your rides in ride reports.

So, two sources of dual sport ride information:

Dual Sport Maps - Ride Where You Want To

GPSies - Tracks For Vagabonds

Enjoy!

And contribute...
