Herrling Island is closed: "Habitat Protection".

I went for a late afternoon ride out to Herrling to see what the water levelwas like. It's blocked off and the road closed, something about Habitat Protection.:mad3:

They have put in logs and double stacked thosehuge blocks across the road on thenorth side of the train tracks.

It's time to take to the streets and bring down the rotten system that allows this to happen.:ted:




I just read about Herrling being closed else were in the site. Well, I am still pissed off.

Can't Motorcycle Dealers and bike clubs do anything? A well armed Citizenre could put this right.:hr:

I guess I'll never get a chance to ride there. Right now I'm worried they will be shutting down the riding area in Richmond. Rednecks that allow their kids to ride without helmets, have way too loud exhaust, throw garbage everywhere including beer cans and have stupid large fires.So a really great place to have a quick ride after workwill shortly be shut down due to idiots.

This is the same reason they closed down Herrling...

Lots of doughheads riding around on quads, through the plantation that was owned by (i think) Coast Paper. They have been threatning this for awhile; they actually followed up on it.

Bozo's with too much beer in their belly & high powered machines are going to close the back country for good if Forestry doesn't do something about the problem soon.:mad3:and since I'm already on this rant...

Someone needs to regulate the backcountry but, we can't trust our government to do it as some others have also stated. The government would just turn it into another cash grab & over regulate the area.

So, what do we do? Maybe it's time we started paying attention & working with people who are trying to protect our sport instead of just going along blindly thinking the good times are never going to end.

We could have a meeting!!!!:talk: What else do you do when you can't ride...:tup:

You are right TL, if we don't watch out and speak up, we will soon have no places left to ride.

And thanks for the link Tom. 150 bucks a year to join "BCORMA" is cheap to ensure that we have places to ride.

But, I still think that taking over the government of BC is the way to go.:tup:

I think if they do shut down areas, they should allow insured bikes or a.t.v's to use them. This would cut the redneck factor down 90%.

How would they enforce that any more than they already can? Other than having cops patrolling the area, they're not gonna look for licensed bikes vs unlicensed unless someone can pay for the cop / security company to patrol it!

Hey guys,

I saw some of the entries mentioning that Herrling is closed (http://www.bcsportbikes.com/forum/archive/index.php/t-103515.html) , but I also noticed that the FVDRA is hosting the annual Family Fun Ride on March8, 2009 on Herrling( http://www.fvdra.com/?q=node/8 )?
So has it been re-opened or something?
I want it back!

I dont think it will ever reopen, its private property and there is no atvantage to the company that owns it

I think the FVDR are aranging a special day only for this event.

Be sure to attend the Trails Strategy meeting if these kind of closures concern you

Check out FVDRA at the motorcycle show concerning Herling
They are promoting and upcoming event there and may have more info about the possibility of riding there in the future

But it is closed due to Yahoo's doing the usual

Does anybody know for certain who was responsible for closing Herrling?? What does the timber company have to do with "habitat protection"? I thought I heard that it was the Cheam Indian band that shut it down. If they did,no amount of meetings will help open it up.

I noticed in one of the banners on the fvdra site for this event(http://www.fvdra.com/?q=node/8 about 2/3 of the way down) that it said "Special thanks to the Popukum Band", so I guess it was them... isn't that a typo?

It was the company that owns the road access that closed it down. Which I beleave is the Timber Company.

I just find it hard to believe that anybody around here would be able to close off a SANDBAR!!! The natives claim all of them from the Agassiz-Rosedale northwards. I would put money (not much mind you) that it is the Popkum band that has the ability to open it up,NOT the timber company. However,I am sure the timber company has no problem that there will be no idiots tearing through their trees.

The area will probably be opened again but only after a group or groups can take responibility for the area and help educate riders on how to act responsibly.
This is the way it is going to be for any area close to dense populations in the very near future. As written about in other posts, bcorma is helping and right now getting involved in groups is the way to go. At this time a bunch of Guys/Gals can get together and form an association and take charge of a riding area so it stays a riding area. Pretty far fetched but its true.

So the short of it is, The reason it was closed was due to abuse by riders and to open it up will be by riders getting involved to keep it open. That's us.

So do you know who to contact with regards to this? I'm familiar with the process of maintenance agreements for land access as we (four wheel drive association of BC) have contracts for several areas in order to keep them open and free.
