norm, i agree south-pole tripby motorcycle is interesting to plan. and well, that's the beginning of the trip really. i'll be in touch for sure. planning is half of it. actually doing it is just to prove that the theory is sound.

Okay, now, weren't you the one calling people crazy for using the KLR as a 400lb dirt bike? Now, you want to use one as a snowmobile :shock: Is that going to be the 07 or 08 model?

Oh, and to answer your question: "how much can the KLR carry?" Well, too much.

On a serious note, if you want some advice on adventure-touring, with a stress on the adventure part, you should get in contact with Tom Grenon http://www.motorcycleexplorer.com/ as he's gone further from civilisation on a KLR than anyone else I've met. If you need more gas than the tank holds, with maybe the addition of a couple of 1 liter oil bottles in reserve, then you should look for fuel drops (Tom organised fuel at a fly-in hunting lodge for his Yukon trip). Anything more than that, and I'd have to say (grudgingly) the KLR is probably not the right vehicle for the job.

lol, good point fixerdave, but i dont think its crazy. im not talking about wheelieing(?) through streams and climbing steep trails, just talking about making it there, very different from my post where i was calling people crazy for thinking the klr a true dirtbike. plus, i've ridden bikes through snow and ice before, and it's no biggie, i've never been on a snowmobile, but i know that my xl250 did a lot better than my gs 750 in snow. i suppose the klr will do at least as well.


fuel drops, is that like having somone fly by and parachute fuel for me? now there's an idea i like. woot! the trip is back on! i'll look into that possibility, i had never even thought of it, even thoughi was thinking of making the return trip through mcmurdo on the courrier plane, but now that i think of it, maybe someone can drop fuel for me... hmmm, wait, no, you got me thinking... i imagined going at it from argentina, but the ride is a lot shorter from mcmurdo. i might actually make it without fuel drops from there.... thanks for feeding the hamster dave. it's running real fast now.

heck, i can probably do it all in one day, especially in january, lol...
