according to WWW.RIV.CA an xr650r being a "closed course competition only" bike or "restricted use motorcycle" i only need the title, bill of sale and recall clearance letter. can the original owner get the"recall clearance letter through the honda site for me? i want to bring it in this week and am getting a lot of conflicting info. who on here has actually done this? i would appreciate any info. thanks.

Hey dpm. An old post of mine:

Hey Kingsway - I brought an XR400 in from the States about a year ago (die-hard Honda fan). Needed an "Off Road Label Only" sticker, signed over Title, and sales receipt for Canada Customs.

US Customs vehicle export requirements do not apply to "off road recreational vehicles like dirt bikes". This is on their website and I confirmed it by phone (twice).

Make sure the bike has a proper VIN number and is on Transport Canada's list of importable vehicles.

I was not required to go through RIV process at the border because it was an "off-road vehicle".

However, when I decided to dualsport, ICBC requires Provincial inspection and Form 1 (vehicle import form) so you have to go through local Canada Customs and RIV process to get this. Not a big deal but $200 and inspection at Canadian Tire. I "re-imported" my bike as a "Restricted Use Motorcycle" and then went through Provincial inspection after adding necessary equipment.

Hope this helps.

Just a further note on the recall clearance letter if you want to dualsport. I had to get this from American Honda Motor Co in California - they said they would do this one time only for me as they did not seem to like me importing a bike from the States into Canada. Something about grey market importing.
