Going to try something a little different than the usual, as the Trail Gnomes have been busy and there is a good dirt bike, hard Dual Sport loop ready at Tamihi.

The Trail Gnomes have changed things up a bit, instead of luring unsuspecting volunteers into busting their asses in fixing the trails. They will be hosting a Trail Ride Day and Introduction to the Trails at Tamihi.

Depending on the interest this guided trail ride for the "new to Tamihi" off road riders, might happen much more than just once.

Introduction To Tamihi, a trail ride 10 am July 19 2020
The Plan

Maximum 12
intermediate level trail riders. Mostly single track

Must sign up
with full name and phone number here. Yes you will have to sign up for this forum

Skill Level
Mostly single track suitable for intermediate skill dirt biker or confidant DS bike rider on sub 650
If it rains it will be slippery

GPS
No you will not need one but if you would like to have a gpx of the route that can be provided thru Trailforks
The route will only be about 25 kms so ez to do in less than 2-3 hours

You MUST
*be a new rider to the Tamihi Area, basically do no know your way around and want to learn more and how to find the trails
*be ready to ride from the Tamihi Staging area at 10am (we leave at 10am sharp so be sure to leave yourself enough time to get ready)
*have spark arrestor (do not make me explain this)
*Knobbie Tires, there will be mud
*Proper riding gear
*bring your own lunch and snacks
*bring you own coffee if you like that sort of thing in the morning
*bring a camera, the ride should be slow and ez so lots of time to take pictures
*be ready for a good time

This ride will be guided by three of your favorite Trail Gnomes. No one will be left behind (not on purpose anyhow) Trail Gnomes are a pretty friendly bunch but........they are not teachers, so any advice you get from them may or may not be of any value. They are not your pit crew and will not fix your flat, however they will provide plenty of advice if you get a flat.

Just a reminder, this is not an adventure ride and the trails are not suitable for a large adventure bike. As far as dual sport bikes are concerned anything sub 650cc should be ok on these trails. If you show up on your KLR650 with saddlebags and TCK80s, bring a friend to help you on the couple of uphill sections.

So How Much Is This Adventure Going to Cost

FREE, NOTHING, NADA, ZIP, if you are a paid member of DualSportBC
For the few people that are not paid members of DualSportBC its still FREE...........Kinda, you will have to listen to one of the Trail Gnomes carry on about how much volunteer work and money it costs to keep these trails open for all. And at the end of the ride you enjoyed yourself and maybe even learned something new, we will ask for a donation to the cause, or better yet you could join the DSBC collective as a paid member. But we will leave that for you to decide at the end of your day when you get home (we have a way to donate thru trailforks). think 20 bucks

I think that is enough to get the ball rolling, so if you have any questions just ask

Note Trail Gnomes enjoy cold ones at the end of the day

Remember, you need trails oriented bike!
Good knobbies, not DS or stock tires.
We had a really wet season so far, so you need grip.
650 bike is big for single track!
You probably need some prior single track experience

I'm on a BMW f800 gs with quite a bit of Offroad experience. Running Mitas E07 rear and TKC80 on the front. Had a KLR 650 in the past and my f800 is a lot more capable bike even though it is about 50 lbs heavier. I'm a friend of Brent Nelson who is on the ride. Any chance I can give it a run?IMG_20200418_090603.jpg

F800 although a very capable bike, there are a few sections that a bike of that weight and power will destroy the trail (more so if it is wet out). I ride a sub 250 lb bike and I find it a handful on the single track. If you promise not to cry when you drop your bike and Brent promises to help get you out of the trail, sure why not?

I want you to have a good time so, for the record I do not recommend that you take that bike there are sections where I guarantee you will not be happy. We will be taking some shorter EZ trails to warm everyone up, if anyone finds the first 10K too much then we will drop them off at the Staging Area as we pass.

Let me know

here is part of the trail, I would not want to take a 400+ lbs bike over this

I see. Yah might be an issue damaging the trail. Been trying to find some more challenging trails but not wanting to get in over my head or in the ER :) . The main issue I end up having is sustained hill climbs where I just can't keep enough momentum to keep on the pegs and then I'm lost and turning around. Thanks.

Maybe I can hit the first 10k and then see how it goes and if it's more than my brute will manage I can do some exploring on the more pedestrian trails. I have no illusions of being Chris Birch on a big bike.

I'll give it a go. If I am fine the first 10 k I'll continue and if not I'll do some exploring on some other more pedestrian trails. Might see if I can borrow a friends smaller bike.
