Island Timberlands

Not sure about Copper Canyon or Northwest Bay but Deereholme is open this weekend. This is the second time they've been open since Summer started (that I can recall anyway). I'm going to take full advantage of the opening and go up fishing rather than ride.

We (my family and I) just got back from riding between Ladysmith Main and the Timberland pit, and there were many loaded logging trucks on the Lady Main! We were just heading up it to get to the powerlines and 2 passed us going the other way(and heard 2 others while in the trees at the edge). Even though we had our wheels in the dirt on the edge of the road, one of the drivers still seemed pissed we were there. Considering everyone still seems to be going in and out of the sportsmans club @ the hatchery, this driver's attitude seemed a little ignorant. With that new Ladysmith development backing right onto the Main, we're going to be the least of that trucker's worries.

Island Timberlands usually doesn't let anyone in if they're hauling. There may be areas around there that they can't close down because of public roads and crown land - I know that's the case for their operations on the Alberni Hump (Copp Creek Main etc). I've been thinking of getting a VHF for the truck for run-ins with the trucks, or at least a scanner so I know where they are. A lot of my friends from the Interior are always amazed at how wide the mains are on the island. Then they see what a loaded coastal logging truck looks like and understand that the mains weren't cut for two way traffic :)

I went exploring after fishing today and found some bike accessible routes to get into the south Shawnigan logging areas that are normally gated.

had a similar experience with an annoyed driver last month on Mt Arrowsmith, even though a friendly dirver lower down on the mountain had radioed ahead that there were four bikes coming up -we were way over on the side too. the way those guys come down the hill, i wouldn't want to be up there on hauling days too often! :hr:

I can't wait to hit the dirt on the south island. I'll have to start with some more wide open stuff cause i'm a street rider only. I really need somebody to teach me how to be at least halfway competant in the dirt. MaybeI should have bought a smaller trail bike first.........NAH............WHEEEEELIES!

See you in the spring.

He bought Glenns (PeeWee) KTM and is away for six months on the frigate Ottawa patrolling the Persian Gulf. And all that's just a guess!

Wait till SBW next year. Your Dyno title is mine......and i'll even leave my air filter in.

And yes, i'm in the Gulf till March(ish). It broke mt heart to put the KTM in storage only a few day after buying her but, it was a good deal. And by the time I get back i'll have her paid for, a supermoto setup, and a bit O' cash in my pocket. Have fun in the mud boys.....its 45 degs here right now!
