KLR dead battery?

I have a brother that showed up at my door one day on a new DRZ, I looked at my tired old XRL and decided it was time for a change. I ride a lot of single track in the back woods around my place and was glad I bought the bike I did...

Ha, I was having fun with the thread too.... actually I just bought it back to the dealer and he said he will charge it as most of the time if the dealer did not charge it long enough when they PDI'ed, it will eventually loose all it's juice as the KLR stator is not strong enough to charge a weakened battery:shock: That's what they tell me anyway. I do remember reading somewhere that the stock stator is a joke!

By the way Scottie, I was convinced to get the DRZ but my brother twisted my arm for the KLR as he got one too. I would be happy with any of them really. I do like the Kilometer range on the Kawa and the fun type of power and the nice seat. For the Suzuk I like the suspension and the brakes, so they both have what it takes for a fun ride. I better get my progressive springs installed though as I bottomed the forks out so hard I really thought both tubes just snapped. It was that loud, and all I did was hit a square edged bump that came too quick, but I was only in 3rd gear down a mountain road.

Here is a pic of our 2 babies! The background is the Valley behind Salmon Arm. If any of you are riding the June-4 run, you will pass through this road on the way into Salmon Arm from Falkland.

Unfortunately we will not be able to make that run. My wife always remembers when I promise her something and I promised to do more renovations on the house this month! Just..DON'T GET MARRIED :shock::shock:

That sounds like a lark.....I think your charging system should have charged the batterie with no problems. Batteries are delivered fully charged but are dry, the dealers put them on a charge for about 20min or so just to get the reaction going again but I don't think any longer will make a differance. But if your batterie is hooped, it can take your charging system out.

I did not know that. Maybe the dealer BS'ed me! I could not find my voltmeter so I asked him if you could do a quick check on the battery as I gave it to him and he wouldn't. He said I need to bring the bike in as well otherwise no warranty?

Thanks Scottie. Whatever the bike, just getting out there and riding is most of the fun!

Too bad. I got married - twice. The second time worked though -it was her idea that I buy the motorcycle!

:DMy first wife, but my 10th bike! She told me she hates bikes.....so in April....I sneaked it in and ran into the house and said...."look what I found darling"......but she did not buy it. I did pick up a helmut for her though as she has been with me a few times so not all is lost.:dude:

The batteriescome dry, except gels, and get filled with acid. They usually specifiy about 4-5Hrs charge at 1 amp.

Your charge system should have been able to recover the battery if you were spending most of the time on the highway, but if you were mostly around town or running extra toys then it could discharge too much.

Actually we are mostly on the dirt roads. Does this mean after every long dirt oriented outing, the battery may give up? I was thinking of getting the new stator, but did not feel like doing just yet as when I do get some free time I just want to ride.

I have a battery tender, and if I know I am going to be away for a bit and not riding my bike I just plug it in to the quick connect I have on my bike. Its really easy to do, it takes about 5 seconds to plug it in. I do sometimes think I hear a little whimpering coming from my bike like a dog who knows he is going to be left at home for the day...:shock:

I find it very useful in the winter time. I switch it back and forth between the Bike, boat & RV battery. I picked it up fron Crappy Tire for about $40. The one I bought was in the middle of the pack. When the battery is fully charged it shuts off and then comes back on again when its needed.

Just some food for thought...

Hey KLRman, like those green bikes, they sure are bright.

Good idea getting progressive fork springs, get an aluminum skid plate while you're at it (and one for your brother), but a quick and free mod is to move that licence plate up. You say that you're be riding mostly off-road, well you'll lose that plate before long if you leave it low like that.

i think your dealer is be essing you. i picked up a battery from canadian tire of all places and that was 4 years ago. never a problem in town or highways. the stock battery lasted 2 years. if you are close to surrey pm me and i'll put a volt meter on the battery. if not take the battery to canadian tire and ask them to test it.
