KLR rear luggage racks & bags.

I just got for Christmas from the wife a set of the rear luggage racks and am interested to hear what people suggest as good saddle bags to buy. Also any suggestions for tank bags. She also bought me the KLR specific tank bag that allows you to fill-up without having to take it off. However I think that this bag is a bit small compared to the Wolfman Explorer or the DualStar units. So I'd like to hear what you have and or would recommend.

Thanks.

Hey Mike,
congrats... good on ya! I've also got one of the kawasaki tank bags. I've actually been quite surprised at how much crap you can actually stuff in that thing, especially when you telescope it out. The only thing I've found with it, seems to sit fairly low and can be a bit difficult to look at maps/directions in the clear sleeve. Other than that, I love it.

Are you looking at hard cases or soft bags for the rear?

Good question, I didn't qualify that pointbefore, yes I would prefer the soft bags.

I use bicycle panniers because bicycle gear tend to be better made, more waterproof, and cheaper than motorcycle stuff. Here's some pics of the racks I made and the bags I use. You can get larger ones, but I like the clearance of these and I don't like too much weight behind be. I load up the tank panniers with all the heavy stuff - tools, tubes, water, stove fuel.

Note the custom seat - best mod I ever made for long distance riding.

Doug.

Thanks 'Yak', I found those bags at a bike shop here in Parksville. Axiom makes several sizes and reasonably priced. Also like you said they are waterproof, and have lots of pockets etc. I will check out more models just in case for pricing.

I have a wolfman tank bag, the big one (explorer?), not the smaller enduro (I think it's called)

An absolute excellent piece of kit. Worth every penny, 200 bones worth of em acually.Tons of room, fits snug to the tank, no magnets to mess around with, solid mounting system.

Went on a trip with my girlfriend on the back, had Joe Rocket saddlebags (about 34 years old)and the tankbag. Tons of room, no problems at all. Expands about 2-3 inches on top, clear pocket, 2 side pockets, one front, and a large rear (crotch end) pocket. I couldn't find enough stuff to put in it! Sunglasses, phone, first-aid kit, gloves, stuff I bought.

If the rest of their bags/equipment is built like this bag, any pieces you buy would be a good investment.

About the saddlebags, look at Joe R's. Not too expensive, about 140 I think I paid, expendableand really durable. The adjustable starps and bungy points make a solid mount. The only thing is the exhaust. You WILL need a better guard than the stock one. Something that will cover the whole length of the pipe and really solid. Not the stock Kawi dealer one. Too weedy.

Hope this helps, but by now, you've probably gotten some.;)

Hey Yak I found you again!

Where did you get the racks done and how much?

Where did you get the saddle bags from, what are they called and how much?

How much did the DR. Lee seat cost...?

I'm trying to get all set up to join yous guys for the June 10 ride so time is running out!!

Ps: info on tank bags and tankpanniers would be great too!

cheers...

I made the racks - cost $14 worth of materials. Had a friend weld them up for a bag of cherry tomatoes from our garden. The bags are bicycle bags made by Axiom. I got them from the bike shop here in Kamloops for $80/pair plus $25 for rain covers, but check out Red Shred's in Williams Lake (and don't pay the sticker price there!). I paid about $140 for the seat, but it was an early version and he already made it up as a prototype, I think he's about $180 (not sure - call him). Still a much better deal than a Corbin.

I wouldn't bother with a MX style helmet for the June trip, most of the KLR guys on the trip will be wearing street lids - quieter for the long days at speed.

There are pics of my tank panniers on the Cariboo Dualsport website - I made them from a pair of MEC shoulder bags - $19 each. Brian Chapman has the same tank panniers if you want to view them close up.

I'm in the office tomorrow, call me @ 250-377-2372.

Hello Scharfg, Yak told me about those bicycle bags you can see, and they from Axiom. Axiom has a few different sizes to choose from and are very good. On the other hand I have also found that Louis Garneau has some really good ones as well, and that will fit the rack system I got from the local Kawai dealer. Now if I get my bike from the insurance company I might splurge and get the expensive ones which are about 30litres in size each side, and go for $160. for the pair. Both companies have smaller cheaper ones for about $79. a pair, however check them out and see what you would like best.

Hope this helps.
