KLR Withdrawal

Just thought I'd update you.

Cast is coming off my left wrist on Sept 5. I had to have surgery to put pins at the base of my thumb. My fifth rib was broken in two places by the camera I was carrying in my pocket - that is the most painful of all injuries-coughing, sneezing, laughing - ouch! It has now been a month and the pain is much more tolerable. I went back to work after a week. My boss didn't expect to see me for months. I didn't want to mope around the house and feel sorry for myself. Been to the dentist 3 times and have most of my teeth capped. Need to replace my bridge which is big dollars (ICBC). Still look at my bike out of the corner of my eye and keep thinking...what do I do next. My brand new $450 Arai helmet has been shipped back to the manufacturer for inspection. Not sure how hard it was hit as I had my visor up and took a good blow to the face. Hopefully it won't be condemned. I have had to go for a CAT scan which has revealed multiple fractures to my facial bone. No wonder I haven't been able to bite down with my front teeth. All in all, I feel fortunate that as bad as it was, it could have been worse. My wife is talking to me again!

I just got back from a successful week's fishing off the west coast - good activity for recovering. I actually was able to handle a fishing rod somewhat.

Hope everyone is having a good summer riding. I miss riding badlybut do admit I'm reconsidering whether I'll ride again - apprehensive and lots of pressure from family and friends. Don't want to make any decisions yet.

Take care!

Good to hear from you, and that you are on the mend. My wife would rather I not ride anymore as well, but knows how grumpy I was between bikes so how would I be without one period???? I to am learning that healing has it's agenda, and theirs little I can do to hurry it up. Well at least don't do things that will slow it down. Look forward to seeing you at a meeting sometime.

Chin up, and see you soon.

An update for you...after what seems like an eternity...8 weeks after the accident, I finally had both casts removed today. Yippee!!! My wrists are still a little weak but I should be good to go in another couple of weeks. I also received the cheque from Beacon Insurance for my bike and am hoping to pick a new KLR soon (red this time I think for a change) After some sober second thought about biking in general, I figure I should continue riding while I can still get my leg over the seat and do some longer trips with my sons. I'll hang up the spurs when it feels right.

I've missed a few Thursday nights as I am teaching groundschool for the next few weeks, but soon I hope to turn up with my new steed. Hope JadeEast's recovery is coming along as well.

That is good news, John. I was going to give another call one of these days. I too, have had my cast removed and the pins taken out of my thumb. It is stiff and sore and my facial bone is still tender for chewing (17 fractures). My spirits are good and just today I started pricing out replacement parts. Does anyone have a recommendation on where to inquire? I still have not made the "big" decision yet about riding. I sure know what my family & some of my friends think.

I am thankful all is working out.

Glad to hear everyone is healing up well. A few years ago I had a "get-off" and was laid up for a while with a broke wrist/arm. IT was an endo on some single track on the way home after a day withmy mx-buddies. Couldn't waite to get back on the bike. Learned my lesson not to ride alone, had to get the 650 back up on her feet and running again then complete the 5k of tight shalie down hill with only the throttle hand at work.

I feel ur pain with the rib thing. My hay fever kicked in about3 weeksinto the healing. I sneezed and all I felt was a CLICK....and the pain was almost untalerable. One of my ribs had cracked where it comes off the vertebrae and the sneeze cracked it open again.

Lessons are learned....get back on the horse:hb:

The two Johns collided (low speed). A brand new KLR & a 2004.

This is a picture of the 2004 KLR.
