KLR650vs XR650

I do a fair bit of street riding and longer road trips and will do an equal amount of off road. What would the honda not give me that the KLR would and vice versa. I see aftermarket tanks on Hondas that give a decent range (or I think thats what I am seeing) , I don't want to start a war with this question but I probably may want a little more power than the KLR offers but maybe I wont, the seat on the Honda looks unfit for long days on the road, but maybe its ok. I am very long on street experience and very short on offroad.

There are to XR650's. The XR650R, which they stopped making in 2007 and the XR650L which they still make. The XR650R is the more off-road model.

The XR650R is more off-road and the KLR is more on-road. The Honda is lighter and easier to handle off road and has more power to weight.

The KLR is a bike that will run for ever, you can take it on long trips and pack a ton of stuff on it. A good rider can do quite well off road will it too.

For just a local dualsport bike, I would go with the XR650R. If you want a daulsport bike for trips, I would go with the KLR.

Am I seeing aftermarket tanks on some of the pics of XR650L's, the stock tank is small by comparison to the KLR. I plan to do 2 and 3 day off road trips and then a couple week long road and off road trips. I am not worried about on road as my sportbikes barely went over 160k's per tank. Its offroad that concerns me with fuel capacity.
