Good bike....needs more power I feel, but otherwise fine.

Myself I would keep your KLR for gravel roads, two-tracking, and pavement use....and maybe go for a Suzi DRZ400 for offroad , as I like the way the 400 pulls a lot more than the 250.

Or if you want an offroad killer, buy a CR500 AF and dualsport it.

If your a bit short in the leg the 250 seems to be light, and short though, my sons day care lady rides one, and it fits her fine.

Hi Willy,

I posted on your other thread about wanting a lighter bike.

I think that the KLX 250s is a great little bike.

For my own personal liking, it's too bad it doesn't have another 100 cc. I guess that I compare the KLX 250 to my KTM 530, and I find the KLXlacking in raw power. It's not a fair to campare the two, but the 530 is my benchmark.

The question is how much power do you want, and what kind of riding are you going to do?

Power = Fun ? I think so.It's just so nice to be able to lift the front wheel up withjust a flick of the wrist. You can't do that with the KLX.

I have only done "C" riding stuff with the KLX, (my daughter would get mad if I really banged up her bike).:shock:I enjoyed riding it and found the bike to have the same feel of weight that my KTM has.

I hope that helps.

Nothing like the power of a 650 but....we have had an 06 KLX250 in the family for about a year now. With an FMF pipe and rejet the power is adequate considering its sizeif you rev it through the gears. With stock gearing it will cruise at 120 but comes alive with lower gearing on single tracks. It has excellent suspension and has beenproblem free, now at 8,000 km.

Having said that ourDT200 is way more fun, much faster and lighter but has inferior suspension.

I just read on your other thread you weigh 230 lbs.... A DRZ400 or similar might be a better choice.

Just bought an 09 KLX 250s. Great bike for a newbie like myself. Havent hada chance to do any real riding yet so cant fully comment on the bike yet. For me, the bike has plenty of power for the moment, however I could see an experienced rider wanting something with more grunt.

Thr bike is definately alot lighter than a 650 with a curb mass of 298lbs. Its a narrow and nimble bike making it suitable for trail riding. Basically take a 250 dirt-bike and tame the gearing for better street riding, add mirrors and blinkers and you have the klx250s. Oh its a six speed too.

Thanks for the response. I really enjoy the Klr on gravel and twisty rural roads. I put a 14 tooth front sprocket on it and it pulls like a tractor. The problem is when the ground gets soft or uneven I can't stop the beast from falling over and then I can't pick it up, (knees). The suzi dr400 is a possible but its not that much lighter than the Klr, about 40 lbs is all according to the web sites. If I could have 2 bikes the Klr would stay but.....I'm not much into wheelies etc but the bike should have some snap. Is there much after market stuff available for the Klx?

Cheers

Hiya - I bought a 07 and love it. I had a bigger dualsport but found too that something smaller/lighter would be more suitable for my riding. The 6th gear is great for highway riding. Mods that I did included a Big Gun muffler, acerbis fuel tank, rear sprocket changed (from 42 to 45) and a skid plate. I just had the sprocket changed a few weeks ago and definately noticed offroad performance has increased. Came back on the Sea to Sky highway yesterday and can still crank out110 - but its more buzzy for sure. Ya, it's not the best at this or that, but for me it's great (and I can pick it up by myself).

Hey Masso! Thanks for that post! I have been struggling with what to buy as a lighter funner bike & I think you just gave me the bike I want. I have always really liked the 250 but was concerned about the power. I just wish you would have started it up in your video so we could have heard what she sounded like.;)

Thanks, TL

The 250 is a good little bike but needs jetting and exhaust to run . I have a full Big Gun system, jets and no smog stuff and it works well. I can almost keep up with my 10 year old on his PW 80.

Hey Buzz, I tried to get my dealer to do the jetting on my bike and they said there were none for this bike. Can you shed some light as I'd really like to get this done. I also have the full Big Gun, but heard that the jets are a necessity.

leeloo, Dynojet makes a jet kit for the KLX 300 which will fit your bike. Our bikes are really lean from the factory so jetting is necessary.

Check out Kawasakiforums and ADV for more info on mods.

I went to see a brand new Klx 250s today at BBY Kawasaki. It seems like a good fit for size and weight but now I'm really concerned about the power or, lack of it.The hole in the end of that tailpipe is LITTLE and I thought the stock Klr pipe was small.I have to admit that Masso's bike sounds good.I'm thinking there is some kind of noise (93 db) limit Masso does your setup meet the 93 db limit? Ideally Iwill find a klx250 or dr 400 used at a price that will let me keep the Klr.There is room in the shed for 2 bikes.....

I found a 2006 KLX250 with a Big Gun, jet kit and Renthal bars....an only 560 miles in Seattle in June. Paid $3200 US. After picking it up and the RIV fee I think the final cost was $4000. I still wished I had taken the Excel SM rims and tires at the same time as he only wanted $800.............oh well. I saw another 2006 with only 1700 miles on it last week and the asking price was only $3000...........almost tempted to get it for my kid. I also have a KLR and I have taken this bike places I would not have dreamed of taking the KLR. Will be selling the KLR soon and replacing it with a road bike.

Cheers,

Riskman
