KLX sprocket 13/45

Hi there - any klx 250 rider's re-do their sprockets? I've read that changing to 13/45 seems popular but wanted to ask what the ridings like post change. Thanks!

I've got 14/48 which is a similar ratio.

If you do a lot of street riding and mainly easy FSR stuff I wouldn't bother changing your gearing..

If you tend to do rougher roads and trails, I would strongly recommend a sprocket swap.

Personally I would never consider going back to stock gearing.

BTW, you can fit a 48 tooth sprocket in the rear and still use the stock chain guard / guide.

Hi Trailrider - thanks for info. I'm doing more and more off FSR roads and using less and less for longer road (except commuting to/from work short distance). How do you find the "on road" riding compared to the stock set up?

Okay, so upgraded rear sprocket from the standard 42 to a 45. Went riding this weekend and definately noticed increased performance offroad. I used to stall engineon lower gears when doing more technical stuff. Now, it just grunts along and gives me extra power instead of farting out and dying. Still get 110K on the highway, which I was surprised at. A little more buzzy, but not so much that it bugged me.

Recently changed it to a 13 in the front + added a dynojet kit. Next up are new springs.

sounds like a lot of fun....I just added a scorpion skid plate and hand guards. how difficult was installing the dynojet?

This would also be a good time to change the exhaust. I am ordering the dyno jet and also the Muzzy pipe . You know , one thing that no one has mentioned on this forum about the KLX 250 is the fron tire ; its just too street. I am thinking of changing it to a knobier one.

Good luck

Had my dealer put the dynojet in. I wanted the Muzzy, but was out of stock at the time. Ended up with a Big Gun exhaust. The Muzzy's NICE! I put knobbies on the front and back. Have fun playing.

I currently run 13/43 with my motard setup. I will be putting the 14 back on. Tops out about 90 km

Mine tops out at 90 too. VERY uncomfortable on roadways - makes me feel like a mosquito buzzing around....bzzzzzzz.zzzzzzzzzzz

Put the 13 tooth on the wife's bike last night, XR650L sprocket is a perfect fit. Still has stock rear sprocket, got the bike up to 120 in top gear and still didn't hit redline. Seems to have a bit more go, but will know better after riding a friend's stock 2007 KLX250 side by side for comparison.

Finally got around to that comparison ride: '09 KLX250 with 13 tooth front sprocket vs '07 KLX250 with 14 tooth front sprocket. We did the test on a hill here in North Van. Both of us did several runs on both bikes. 1st and 2nd seemed about even, but once we hit 3rd, the '09 would start to pull away.

Dropping a tooth on the front has helped the KLX a lot on the highway as well. For example, riding up the cut, the bike can now keep whatever speed you started at the bottom without having to downshift. It won't really gain any speed going up the hill but it definitely won't lose any speed, and you'll have to use full throttle to do it. Riding to Squamish on the highway is also better, I could keep up with or pass traffic without having to gear down.

Looking forward to ordering the jet kit and exhaust to see what they do for the bike. Will doing the snorkel/opening up the airbox do anything on it's own, or should I wait until the jet kit and exhaust are on?

Hi bcbugsy - had to get a new chain for the 13/45 setup.Am now thinking of changing rear back to the 44 as I can't maintain 90km on the highway with any level of comfort: feel like a mosquito in a tornado is the best way to explain. Definately the 13 up fronts a keeper :)

Thanks leeloo, I was gonna do the thirteen first anyways, but wondered what a guy can do before a new chain is required, maybe a 43 or 44? Any idea what chain you will put on with the 44. Let me know what kind of top speed you end up with from that combo. Nothin like learning from some one elses trial and error.:DBcbugsy.
