Last year Dakar organizers made a rule change in hopes of making it easier for other brands of motorcycles place near the top in this event... The rule change limited the displacement to 450 cc and in effect made the once dominant KTM 690 obsolete for running in the pro class...

KTM then built a 450 Rally bike in order to try to continue its dominance in Rally events...

The rally has just finished and results are in... KTM has once again won this event and also had a good showing in the top ten...

On the KTM website they talk about making a production version of this bike... I wonder if a 450 Adventure will show up in the not to distant future?

NICE!!!..I've been following it every day !!!!!..Funny though 7th place on a 690? ,go figure...KTM RULES..[ya I said it }..Paul.S

Yep, you can still run the 690 but not in the pro class.... I guess the rule change can't be that bad for KTMs business as a lot of those guys that bought 690 Rally bikes a couple years ago have now had to reinvest into the 450 program...Maybe in a couple years they'll change it to 250cc max...

I didn't look through the rules....but is the same engine used for the whole race, or can they swap out?

I'm pretty sure all of the top guys, regardless of the manufacturer, used up all three. You just hear about KTM because they are on top and very much in the limelight. Remember that only just last year, the 450's were allowed as many engines as they wanted, while the 690's were only allowed one engine change, and there were rumors that Yamaha and Aprillia changed their engines every night. It's hard not to think that someone wanted KTM to fail, or just get off the top rung for a change.

I wonder if anybody finished on one engine? I don't know how anyone can be down on ktm for being on top, they ain't cheating just strong riders/bikes. Nice to see yamaha with a strong showing on the wr450, they might spend a little more on the dualsport market now (hopefully). Saw the super teneire at the bike show and was not impressed.

Jonah was on a Yamaha YZ450. It was his personal preference to go with the YZ rather then the more common injected WR450s'.

Regarding the rumours of Yamaha changing engines everyday… very simply… wrong/outdated information. Prior to the engine rule changes 2 years ago, all machines under 450cc were not restricted to the number of engines through the race. Back in the David Fretigny/Yamaha days, they did indeed run a fresh engine everyday.

Don't believe everything you read in the competitor's list. Jonah's own release stated WR450 with the JVO kit. There were only maybe 2 EFI YZF's in the Dakar this year, and they were prototype kits put together by JVO I believe.
