Hiya Blocker:

I'm glad to hear your new bikeROCKED THE PENINSULA!! I have some questions for you now that you've put a few miles on her.

  • How many miles could you desert ride on a (Clarke)tankful of fuel? Just curious about fuel consumption [mpg] and range. What was the best/worst on a tank?
  • How many hours of riding in 1500kms? Relates to service intervals.
  • What sort of maintenance/repairs interval does the factory suggest for this many hours?
  • What tires did you run, and how did they work?
  • Stock gearing, or did you change sprockets?
  • For a long stretch of flat road, what was a comfortable high speed to cruise at w/o winding the thing out? Was was the wind like at that speed?
  • Were you carrying any gear on your PMB rack? If so, how much weight?
  • In the sandy stuff, or in the wide open, were you wishing you had a 525?
  • What mods are you considering next, if any? Maybe a steering damper? Cooler for taking along fish tacos?
And of course, lastly...

  • Did you take any photos, and where's the ride report???:D
Cheers!

depending on how the conditions, I got 21-25+ km/L. Clark tank 11.8L best 300+km

worst 240km.

1550km in 30 hrs changed oil at 15 hrs, factory recomendation, the oil was not to black so could have gone longer.

Changed air filter skin daily, and changed filter after 3 days.

Front Perelli MT21-- read Bridgestone Motocross M402-110/100 the rear had 100km and came with the bike.

14 t stock gearing, on the long stretchs 110-120 km/hr was not a problem, hit a max of 145km/hr and was still climbing---6 speed trans. (that was fast enough for me)

On the rack, had tire repair kit, tools, tubes and 4L gas for the over 300km loops.

The PMB rack worked well, however, I did fall and need to bend the sub-frame back into place, as the extra length of the rack probably caused the frame to twist a bit.

I also had a backpack with water, powerbars, over night clothes etc.

I was happy that I didn't have a 450 EXC on the long rock climbs, as the power band on the 400 is smooth, one of the fellows had a 450 and had some excitement as the power came on- on the hills.

I am ordering a Scotts damper -- the sand was very chalanging.

I did take a few photo's, however the fellows that we were with have been down to Baja several times and are interested in speed and distance.

Blocker, I hear you had a good trip to the Baja on the "BUS"

I talked to my friend Terry about the trip. He's the guy who rode the 525 KTM. He said it was the roughest he has seen it down there.

I rode with Terry and Murry last summer, a quick group to ride with. It forces you to hold the throttle on a bit longer when you chase those two.

A trip report from your view point of the "BUS TRIP" would be interesting, as I have heardabout a couple of the trips from the Kamloops guys. It always becomes an adventure from what I have heard.

Oh...to ride in the warm sun !!!

Hey Rocketman---you do not need a plate or insurance to ride in Mexico. At the check points, they were more interested in what was in ourback-packs. You may be asked to prove that you own the bike (we were not asked). None of the 8 bikes had current plates and we did not get insurance--- except for the bus.

I took my KTM 400EXC since we were doing day rides and over night's in motels.

For the sand, woops, dry lake beds and single track I am sure that your KTM will be more fun and easier to pick up when you drop it.

The best map of the Baja is the AAA---free to members. Have a great time.

Soupbone--- so you have ridden with Terry and Murry --- speed and distance is the name of the game. I spent a lot of time eating dust, trying to keep up--- going much faster than I felt comfortable with--- and starting to learn how to ride in sand. If you are going to pre-ride the Baja 1000 that means that you need to do a lot of riding--- 1550 km in 5 days, mostly on the course. It was a great hoot and I would do it again.

Well actually I am going back with TomT early January, starting in San Fran and riding to Los Cabo on the tip of Baja and back. Should be a great trip.

Acerbis is bringing these into Canada this year!! Just order them from your local dealer. Around $420, but perfect for those long trips to Mexico, or Kamloops via Douglas Lake on 1 tank.

About $420 Canadian retail. Will be in the dealer's 2006 catalogs that they haven't seen yet, but they can call Northstar for P&D.

Any idea if you have to use the stock seat or if an enduro engineering tall seat would work with this tank?.

Yes to both, I believe. It is designed to work with the stock EXC seat, so therefore it will work with the EnduroEng or corbin, or guts racing I'm sure.

I'll let ya know, cause I'm gonna get one! And get the EE tall soft seat. I'll try it with my brother's Corbin saddle as well.

What kind of range do you figure a 525 would get out of 25 litres with a semi-sane operator?

Maybe as much as a KLR But you wouldn't get there as fast.:mad2:

KLR is about 350 to 400 kl. 23 liters.

Sorry to say that K word on this thread. I'll be leaving now.:hf:

I've been eyeing up those 525s for a possible after my 640 wears out. Out of 25.5L my 640 gets 450-600 km depending on my wrist. Tried to talk a friend into a 525, I wasn't to persuasive as he bought a 510 Husky, nice bike, but a little harder to find parts.

Rocket Man, that must be slow tight trail miles I expect, or where else is your fuel going? Have you done the BK mod (or the honda diaphragm for your accel pump). Shoudl imprive fuel economy.

The guys who ran 2 525EXC across the transam trail were getting 150-180miles to the3.2gall CLarke tanks. But thats dualsport riding.

Get the JD Jetting kit and the diaphragm mod and you will see a big improvement in fuel economy.

I'd be surprise if you couldn't get 300 miles from a 25L tank. I got that easy on my 640 adventure and it's 28L tank.

If he could stay off the main jet he would get better mileage too:tup:. Rocketman is more than just a name. I think if we installed a throttle stop at the 1/2 way point not only would he get better mileage but he might notice all that blurry stuff off to the side of the road is actually beautiful scenery.:spl:
