Don't believe the hype about a 250cc not being highway capable. I've had 12 bikes and a few were sub 400cc.

I would personally go with a first gen klx250s. Don't make the common mistake of buying a KLR and expecting it to do single track with ease. You WILL find yourself wanting to explore that steep, loose off-camber trail, no matter what you think now. Lighter the better IMO.
