Loud Pipes piss Kootenay people off

Motorcycle noise petition gets 4,300 signatures in Kootenays - The petition asks Attorney General Suzanne Anton and the RCMP to crack down on excessive motorcycle noise.

Hwy 31 outside of Kaslo - Motorcycle Club president in denial - "I'd rather listen to a motorcycle go by for five minutes than listen to my neighbour mow his lawn ..." :wi:

Quiet pipes are good. Nicely tuned is awesome.

.....and thats EXACTLY why I correct folks when they call me a "Biker"
I rode an ex-bro-in-laws straight piped "cruzer" and and my sister's "Sport Ster"it was kinda embarrassing how loud the bikes was.

I think he said 2 different things here.
But Ian McLeod, president of the West Kootenay Road Runners motorcycle club, says he understands some of Mason's concerns, but he doesn't think loud bikes are a frequent occurrence in Kootenay towns and highways.

He says a lot of the groups of bikes that ride through are on charity rides, and many local businesses benefit from the business bikers bring with them, including international tourists who have heard about how good the Kootenays are for riding.

Listened to the audio

WTF they had motorcyclists sign this petition, BS.

I dont believe in loud pipes, but I sure do like the sound of a well tuned bike, sometimes that could be slightly over the legal limit.

What you will find is that the vast majority of bikes are not that loud, the problem is that the sound is identifiable and for most people consider an identifiable sound is a loud sound.

Dumb ass comment from the biker that the deer run away when he rides his Harley with the loud pipe

Dumb Petition, lets ignore it, but keep a eye on the situation.

I also like a good sounding exhaust, but I can see where those local people are coming from. Here in Qualicum Beach we have starting in April a constant flow of VERY loud Harley's going by all day long. Most with modified pipes and most not trying to keep the noise down in residential areas . They just don't give a shit about other people or they would take it easy through towns.
I have aftermarket pipes on my Tuono twin and it sounds good ,not as loud as a Harley ,but still louder than stock, but the difference is I take it easy in populated areas.
What eventually will happen is the police will come down on everybody because of a few idiots.

I sympathize with the folks behind the petition. We have the same problem here in whistler : narrow valley , one main route through , and multiple traffic lights which provides opportunities for the loud pipe guys to show off how loud their bikes are .

noise pollution should be treated like a crime . It is completely selfish unnecessary behaviour on the part of small minded inconsiderate individuals . The persons guilty of it should be forced to listen to same outside their homes at random times day after day , night after night and maybe they might begin to understand how the rest of the population feels .

but how to regulate and enforce noise levels : mandatory , yearly testing when insuring the bike with risk of immediate impoundment if found to exceed decibel levels after the inspection ? Repeated random roadside testing stations will produce the same noise levels that they are trying to eliminate .

i guess it is a symptom of our society . . . Self indulgent , self entitled individuals who feel their " lifestyle " is above all else .

for me personally , I want to pass by with as little notice as possible , and for the people I do see , I want them to be unaffected by my presence , not pissed off by it .

Hey everyone, this is my first real post. I have a slightly louder than stock exhaust on my dual sport and my truck, personally I like the sound. I also live at the bottom of a hill, next to a stop sign on the highway, so I can understand where they are coming from. I don't mind when louder, nice sounding vehicles drive by or pull out onto the highway. There are always people that take it to the extreme though. I even don't mind semi drivers using their jake brakes coming down the hill, better that then ending up in my front lawn with their brakes on fire. The vehicles that bother me are older vehicles with rusted out muffles that are obnoxiously loud, but don't sounds nice or cars that drive by with music pounding so loud I can feel it. If the RCMP are going to target loud noises on the road, they should be targeting everyone, not just motorcycles.

Ok , sorry rant not ended . . . Just listened to the audio .

mcloud is not a good spokesman for his group .

In his half-assed attempt to explain loud pipes , the correct answer is not " to scare deer away from the road " , the honest answer is " perceived performance gains " .

and as for his veiled threat to " change routes " ( and take money away from the communities that benefit from the charity rides ) , it ain't about the motorcyclists per se , it's about the louder than necessary bikes participating . . . The organizers need to have the cojones to approach riders ( and they know who they are ) and say " hey listen , we'd love to have you participate and contribute , but your bike and/or the way you operate it is pissing off a lot of people , which makes us all look bad . . . We'd be happy to have you out next year if you address the problem. "

/now rant ended

Saw an interesting tee shirt on a dual purpose rider's back...'If loud pipes save lives imagine what would happen if you learned how to ride that thing!' A bit long winded when you breeze past a bunch of Hogs but I like the sentiment.

No reason for super loud pipes. I used to work as a tech for a Vancouver HD dealer. I won't use the name as I don't want to get grief. The most common modification we did to bikes was exhaust hop ups and jetting or computer reprogramming. It did bump up the performance but the same result could be achieved without the super loud pipes. The number of these stupid flippin things http://products.vanceandhines.com/store/harley/26065/ I installed was ridiculous. So freakin loud it was painful to ride the bike never mind for the people behind you. Most of these guys are "weekend badboys" (working professionals that ditch the suits for leathers on the weekend and pretend they are on sons of anarchy). Or people trying to compensate for something.

Are some of those pipes just hollow tubes? They sure sound like it. It's like driving a Car with open Headers. And like you say, the level of the sound hurts your ears. So much for a nice moderate performance sound.

Ha, very funny.....except I have doubts they can read, never mind comprehend.
I don't think the cops would have any trouble picking out the true offenders....and I've yet to see them put any effort into that. Would be nice if they pulled the worst culprits over and send a good message to the others.

Hadn't thought of this before . . . They have unmarked cop cars , why not unmarked cop bikes ?

Moto cop with a Db monitor just rolls along with a suspect moto , noise exceeds limit , issue ticket , bike needs to pass re-inspection within a time period , and then again upon insurance renewal .

"so, the obvious question. Why DO people have loud pipes? Really."

it's the -look at me syndrome, -aren't I just the coolest dude you have seen today, or maybe all week?? if I didn't have these fukin loud, noisy assed pipes on my bike, I might have rode passed here and you would not have even given me a 2nd glance. Some people like to ride just because we like riding, like most of us here, others like to ride/make noise so they feel like they are part of the group, and the louder your bike, the higher up the ladder in that group, they perceive they may get, or be. I've also seen it in the mx world where dad is badgered into buying the mx racer son, a big assed loud pipe, that they both hope will help the non talented kid, who can't or won't do anything but whine, win the race or championship with said pipe only to have the kid come in 19th,because he was to focused on making noise, when the girls on the fence could see it, rather than winning the race with a factory bike, and silencer
