making a 140 KLX streetlegal ? is it possible

Hi there,

I'm new to BC and cant seem to find information online on how to do an aftermarket conversion of a dirtbike to a dual sport.

I'm about to buy my first dirtbike and I was looking at buying a KLX 140, but I also would like to be able to connect trails via a short pavement sections or just ride out to the trails on the bike..so it would be nice to have it street legal.

This is not my first motorcycle, but my first try at dirtbikes, which is why I thought to keep the engine small...another option of course is the streetlegal KLX 250S...what is the difference between the streetlegal 250 and the dirtbike 250?..besides price that is?

PS..I want to use this bike 95% for singletrack riding

Chantal newbie to Dirt,

Idid own a BMW Dakar for 2 years..but never took that beast off road, way to big and heavy for me...

Welcome to the forum Chantal.



You will need lights, mirrors, etc.



Baja sells nice kits, or you could do it piece by peice.

A way to power the lights to, and a speedometer .



Then have to have it passed by inspection.



It is possible, but a bit of work and money.



Fun little bike for sure.

I'm in Vancouver.

Does anybody know if there is a local stor in the area that would be good to consult with when it comes to light dirt bikes ..street legal versus not and how to convert them?



is there a webpage to what a motorcyle needs to e streetlegal in BC?

I assume it will need:

Lights (brake and head light)

turn signals

Mirrors

I assume DOT legal tires...



And where can you find out the emission requirements?? I guess that really is the biggie!!

..will it also need an speedmeter? I think those little 140's dont have them do they?



I guess I rreally should visit a dealer, even though I do plan to buy a used bike for starters.

Hi Chantal.

I just bought an 09 KLX 250s and love it. Its a dirt oriented bike when compared to the larger dual sports. Light and nimble. Its already street legal so no extra additions are required. The bike is a little tall. Im 5'9 and can just get the balls of my feet down. The Klx 140 would be lower. The250 is a little underpowered but still a great capable bike. Modifications are possible to increase power (pipe, jetting etc). It also has a six-speed transmission. Definately worth considering I think.

The honda 230 L is a lot lower than say a klx 250.



And I got the wife one to...great little bike.

HMmm...I guess there is a reason why the DS machines are about 1000-2000$ more...



Can I ask you guys one more question...I'm new to dirt biking and want to take the bike on singletrack....Cant make up my mind about getting a 125/140 versus a 230/250 machine...I'm 5.10 and about 145pounds..I'm worried that I'm too big for the smaller machine and will outgrow it too quickly??? I did however do my first singletrack ride on a TTR230..and it fely OK but definitely a bit sluggish maneuvering it..especially had a hard time controlling it while standing...then again yep that was my first time on dirt :)...otherwise had a Dakar for 2 years but only rode it on streets...

Any advice welcome...

Also, is there a place were you can take a dirt biking lesson that provides bikes?? this could help me with my dilema :)...

The 230 honda is not going to over power you, nor is it so gutless as to bore you.

Heck I can ride the wifes, and think its a balst to play on.

Lots of group rides get hooked up on this forum, maybe go on a few and watch and learn...then practice.



If you are ever in the kamloops area lots of us ride here regularly, and I would be more than glad to take you out, and help you learn.
