Mitas

Seems like people like the Mitas tires. This is intended to be a thread that discusses the different series and models of tires. When you ask for Mitas what are you getting and what do you like?

I recently bought Mitas tires for my DRZ400S. The rear is an Enduro E-09.

The front is a C-11 Cross Front. The knobs are widely spaced and it is twitchy on the road. It has the red ring around it. It does not say DOT approved. However it also does not say "for offroad use only".

I'll offer up some comments after our Death Valley trip

I have the Mitas 140 rear E-09 on the DR650. Offroad, the wide aggressive spacing is terrific in mud or snow. Onroad the sticky compound with large blocks grab and hold well on pavement or gravel. It is smooth and quiet. I run it at 24 psi on road, 18 off road.

Your Mitas C-11 Cross front looks like a motocross tire, totally unsuited to gravel or pavement. The compound is very hard and knobs are very small and widely spaced. Should work well though in deep sand or mud.

Without DOT approval I would not pass it for street use in a Gov't inspection. My .02.

Edit...Just to add...my priority for a dualsportFRONT KNOBBIE is the best traction possible on wet or dry pavement (safety). Myfavorites so far are Pirrelli MT21 orConti TKC80.I don't want the front tiresliding out mid corner on the street. Keith, you've seen how far over the DR will lean on twisty pavement with excellent traction using MT21. Knobbies work best on dirt when new but best on pavement when worn in.
I know there are other great knobbies out there thatothers have experience with. I tried a set of Kendas last year, scarey on wet pavement especially tar snakes.

Who sold you the C-11 thats a off road racing tire? The matching tire for the E-09 is the C17 still a aggressive knobby but exceptional on road characteristics and its DOT.

I ride the E09 and C17 combination on both the 400 and 650 DR's and have always been please with the handling on and off road. The DRZ400 is a little twitchy at highway speeds with any off road style of tire, you just get use to it.

Here's a site that has pics of the Mitas tires and their rating (re: DOT etc) I wouldn't recomend ordering from them because they're in the north eastern states and shipping will probably kill you. Get them much faster from Tom too. Good for reference though.

The front I'm using on the 400 is fantastic btw. Grips in all surfaces including pavement and imo, is way better than a Pirelli MT21.

er.............I'll have to look at the bike but it is DOT approved so I believe it's the C17. I had it on the front with a Dunlop 606 on the back and that combo seemed to work well. I know, you really shouldn't mix tires but hey, I gotta use them up. Have the C17 on the front now with the remains of a MT21 on the rear. The front hooks up nicely while the rear is fish tailing:clap:. Entertaining:hb:

I would have to say the Mitas E 09 on the back of my 640 Adventure is completely shot, here's how it compares. Mitas E 09 5500 KM, B/S Trailwing 42 5000 KM, Pirelli MT 70 4200Km, Metzler Sahara 5700KM, Next tire is the Conti TKC 80 I hope this one lasts a little longer. The worst tire for wear was the Pirelli , I barely blinked and it was worn out, I ran it a little longer than I should of because I didn't have a replacement at the ready. I now have the next tire waiting before the one I'm running is half worn. I would have to say for all around riding the Mitas was the best so far and for lots of pavement I wouldn't hesitate to go with another Trail Wing.

The Mitas E-09 rear I recently installed lastedsix daysand 1,500 km, about 75% worn out.

Bombas Perreli MT21 is worse yet, same trip, same milage.

When I was riding in Vegas a few years ago, I contacted the organiser of the ride to find out what tires I should run on my 350. He told me to go for Kenda Trackmasters because they're cheap. He said on the surfaces you run on down there that any tire would be toast in a week so you may as well go for a cheap one.

Exactly why Mitas are a good choice. Cheap tire at 67.00 installed. Not that its a cheap quality tire though. We were real happy with its performance in all conditions down there.

My TKC 80's seem to last fairly well on the back and forever on the front. I'm about 210lbs and ride hard and fast most of the time.

My last rear got 5500km and the present one has 3500km of Death Valley and Baja California under its belt with lots of meat left. The front has around 12000km on it and also has lots left.

Not cheap tires but under $100 if you get them at the big 40% sales.

They are, in my opinion, fantastic tires. Amazing pavement cornering, tracks well, handles sand, rocks, mud, snow and rain without any ideosyncrasies.

Next set? TKC's without a doubt.:dr:

There's a serious problem with the street performance of the Mitas! While the KLRs perform fine on road with the E 09, the DR 650 seems a little sluggish! :wi:

Greg's gonna kick my ass off road for this!

HaHa! I dont know about that. Last week in Nevada the E09 equipped DR chased down and passed a dozen Harleys on the open highway :))): Naturally the Harleys could not get over 90 mph so it was easy. :f: No wonder the tires wore out so quick. :hr:

Joker, that price was from Adrenalin Motorcycle Co-Op in Victoria. Discounted prices plus free installation & balancing for members. I'm going to get in trouble for telling you that, afterall much better to buy from the DSBC store and support this club eh.
