Need help with Odometre and Tach

Hi there the speedo/odometre and tach does not work in the '87 KLR I just purchased. THe sell said I would just have to replace the speedo cable. So I did that and the speedo works but not the odometre, what do I do to get the odometre working (kinda helpful to figure out when to gas up).

Also my tach needle jumps up and around and the mechanic said it's pooched. How do I/can I replace it and if so how much and where should I get the part...?

I know a lot of guys have replaced the speedo/odometer with a wireless bicycle computer - far more accurate than the "optomistic" original one (+ 10%). Check out Red Shred's on 1st Ave.

Can't help you with the tach. Did you check the dealer to get a baseline?

might just try ebay, not sure if it'll fit, go to ebay and search (klr speedometer) a guy has a 2006 speedo up 4 sale showing 1915 miles. not kms.. usa. not sure what a retailer would charge ya. or if that would fix the problem. i don't know much about speedo's but would lean towards a broken gear internally. especially with speedo working but not odometer. as for tach i'm not sure if it is cable driven or electric. if electric try a continuity test to see if you don't have a broken wire somewhere on the wire. if cable try hooking it up to a variable speed drill. hope this helps. Ed

I wish I would have had a crystal ball to know the odometre would not work as that would have saved me the $30 bucks on the speedo cable.

I'm looking at getting this product from Trail Tech, it seems like a good option:

A fellow in the states has a used cluster for sale for $125US so we will see.
