New Jardine Pipe

Picked up a new Jardine RT4 pipe for my 02 KLR over Christmas. Did the install this week and love both the performance and the sound of the throaty pipe. :dr:

My neighbour (shfit worker) is less than pleased about my toy's new found guts though....he's a good guy and I'd like to keep him happy. That's the down side of having good neighbours I suppose..:?

Has anyone with a Jardine Pipe tried out the "Quiet Module Insert" supplied by the company. It is supposed to bring down the average noise rating from 99 - 101 dbA to 92 - 95 dbA.

Now an average noise reduction of six to eight decibels doesn't sound like a lot to me (no pun intended) for the cost of the insert. However, I'd like to hear (again..no pun) from anyone who has used the insert who can advise if it is worth the money.

Less sound = more ground. Pissing off your neighbour is only the beginning...

Perhaps you don't realize that the calculation of decibels is not linear. 100 is almost 3 times louder than 92.

I hope you choose to install the quiet insert. Otherwise you will be denied access to an increasing number of organized events in most states and provinces.

Have to agree with that. I can't answer your question about the Jardine insert but if it reduces the sound to 92 decibels, that should keep your neighbour happy. I was riding yesterday with Riskman who has a Jardine installed on his KLR. It sounded great at idle but was supertrapp loud with throttle cranked. You can PM him for more info. Recently I removedthe Supertrapp from my DR650 and switched back to stock.

96-98 from what I've read. I enjoyed the sound at first but soon found it tiring on long rides, like our Death Valley trip.Tried repacking the baffle and running less discs but was still too loud. Other riders even complained! (Riding with BMW Nut on the Dead Zone Rally) The last straw was moving from a house to townhouse. Too bad the stocker is such a heavy pig.

:ted: FYI...for those of you who were wondering...the stock KLR pipe is rated at 80dbA. It's stamped right into the side of the pipe.

you might want to check out the street rides section on Advrider - there's a thread on there right now that covers the testing procedures in great detail ( no more loud pipes on HD's, IIRC)

long story short, it sounds like the 80dB test, and 96 dB test are actually about the same noise levels, but the test procedures, and sensor ( mic) locations differ between the 2.

KRL kid - a lot of the Buells run the Jardine with quiet core: good results on the dyno, AND on the ears. if you'd like to see some actual numbers, there was a privately done exhaust shootout, including dyno graphs, noise level testing, and rider impressions: its available for download from the American Sport Bike website

I've got the quiet insert on order and will give it a run to see what the difference is in sound and performance. The pipe seems to be settling down a bit with some carbon in her now...a bit more seasoned if you will.

Just a non-motorcycle-but-still-on-topic input, I had a 94 Jimmy that the second thing I did after purchase (first was the 4" lift) was to put on the mid-rated Flowmaster muffler. Really sounded cool for the first while, then the resonating through the frame at lower rpms (as in climbing a hill in first gear) started to drive me nuts, then I got really sick of it after that.

When I got my KLR last year, my wife was surprised at how quiet it was. From a safety point of view, I figured I'd get an aftermarket replacement that would be a bit louder, but not to the point where it would be irritating. I talked to a guy in one of the local dealers, and he told me thatinstalling these after-market exhaust systems don't really improve the horsepower output, but that they just sound like they do. (I'm no expert, and I'm open to feedback on thisbecause I'm really interested in knowing more aboutthat)Apparently there's studies done that had stock exhaust and replacement exhaust all dyno'd on the same bikethat basically showed no real increase in performance.

I've gone on a trail ride with a friend running a Kawi 250 2-stroke, and his bike is so loud under power, that I had to drop back 100 ft just to be comfortable. Now I know I'm getting into apples and oranges at this point, but the whole point is togive yousomething to think about: how that extra noise is going to affect you, your co-riders and your bike's performance.

By the way, KLR kid, what brand handguards have you got on your bike?

It is absolutely beyond my comprehension why anyone should want to run a loud pipe on a regular motorcycle. Don't get me wrong here, I think they sound great also, but only for a couple of minutes. When I'm out riding withAnnie Sunday and her F****** Supertrapp, she has to ride behind and that's all there is to it....... Don't tell her I said that though.

Thought I'd post up some info of the "Quiet Module Insert" provided by Jardine for the RT-4 if others are considering this addition to their after market pipe.

My first reaction was..."hey this looks kina cool" and if it takes the edge off a bit that's a "Win Win" situation for everbody. :dr: They must be pretty popular because I had to order the part directly from Jardine in California as all other distributors were on back order with no idea as to when stock would be coming in. I got one of the 50 units that were produced by the factory in March.

Job was done....Sunny Afternoon...Time to take the Beast out for a RIP and see what difference this little puppy makes....

Fire up the engine...NO CHANGE...the tones are higher (not as pleasant) but no appreciable change to volume. Out on the road...coasted to the stop sign up the block. Turned onto the main road and hit the throttle.....guess what....

F#$%^&* TWEETY!!!!!..:shock:.sounded like a blue heron in heat...it was horrible!!!! I didn't even have that with my stock pipe.

I got on the phone to Jardine and talked to the tech guy...conversation went something like this:

Me: This "Quiet Module Insert" doesn't make my bike any quieter.

Him: Hmmmm...interesting

Me: Is there something that I've done wrong...

Him: No not at all.

Me: How come it tweets when I'm under power on the road?

Him: Don't know....you're not going to leave it in all the time are you?

Me: Planning to...(for $45USD)..why not?

Him: Well...they're not REALLY to be run in the pipe..you just kina put them in when you need to pass a local state inspection.

Me: So I can't rely on this as a day to day sound dampener....

Him: No

Me: So you'll give me a refund for this thing when I send it back to you right?

Him: I'll transfer you to accounting. Hold the line please.



I did manage to get the money back for the part but ended up out of pocket for duty and postage...worth a try though.

Overall...I like the pipe the way it is out of the box anyways. Even the neighbour said that he was initially surprised by the new gutsy sound of the bike but now finds it quite pleasing. I do too. If you ride it smooth in the neighbourhood...you get smiles and waves as you go by.

I'm not going to weigh in on the "Loud pipes save lives" debate asI think of myself as a bit more of a moderate that an always or never kind of guy...I can say that I used my throttle to warn one motorist who was about to cut right into me and it worked better than my little horn...easier to find than the horn button too.

Mileage wise...I've done a Level II Dynojet Kit with a K&N air filter and the Jardine Pipe...I consistently get 45mpg for both highway and off road riding. After 300km on the odometer I hit the pumps and she'll only take 15 litres

The bike is a LOT smoother with much more pull in all gears. I've got to say...I'm a happy camper. I think the pipe has become a little less brassy as time goes on. 2000km later and it's really nice.

Anyways...just wanted to let the KLR or other Jardine guys out there know that personally I really like the pipe and think it's a worthwhile upgradeespecially if you've got tweety behind you. I would not recommend the "Quiet Module Insert"...the name is a bit misleading.
