Frog,

You are right, I'm starting to bobble from one bike to another. If Yamaha had a streetable 450enduro, it would be my first choice. However the conversion costs nearly as much as the K.T.M. (within $800) I like Husky but there are few dealers etc. The K.T.M. Adventure bikes are a bit big for the dirt. My riding experience was all street. RD-350/ 450, Suzuki 500 Gamma, Yammie xs11, V-Max. Am I showing my age?

Actually the 610 is not in the same category as a BMW 650 , 640 Ktm , 690 KTM.

The Husky feels way lighter and is far better in the woods than any of those. The 610 is more like a Honda XR 650R. But with a 6 speed trans , electric start and streetlegal.

Bill , Have you ridden the BMW X-Challenge or the new KTM 690 Enduro in the woods? I haven't heard any reports on the 690 yet but the BMW seems to do pretty well in that element for a big bike... I know my 640 Adventure is a bit of a brute for that stuff but the scaled down version in the form of the LC 4 and the SXC come in at thirty + pounds lighter and are much easier to throw around.....

I guess I'll have to take a test spin on the 610 and see the magic for myself....

5th Gear, I admire your enthusiasm and loyalty to Husky. At this time I haven't yet ruled Husky out. However when I was at your shop the other day you only had 2 dirt bikes on the floor. Your sales rep told me the demo bikes were apart. When I asked him about the seat on the 610 he told me it was identical to the dirt bikes. I sat on that seat and it hurt. Icouldn'tget an exact date when the new bikes come in. Then I went to Holeshot and saw the 2008 K.T.M. and the Suzuki's and the Honda's and the 2008 Yamaha's were across the street. I was like a kid in a candy store. I can't buy something that isn't there.

Hi Blackmax,

I have been looking at Dirt Birts as well. Something light and one that I don't have to do a crazy amount of maintenance on. It's been an education looking around.

Anyways, I will be looking to see what you end up getting.

Hey North,

I'm now concerned on the maintenence end. Most of these bikes require constant valve adjustments and oil changes. From what I understand the K.T.M. needs to be laid on its side to fill the crankcase ? I come from a time when dirt bikes were all 2 strokes so I really need to do my research and count on help from Duelsport members so I get the right bike.

I don't like laying my KTM on its side to fill the crankcase {or for anything}, so I just remove the filler plug and pour in the oil from there just like any other bike. I look at the valves about every 5000 but they don't often require any adjustment... And when they do it's a pretty easy job with conventional tappets.....

Island Hopper,

Thanks for the info, every 5000 k is peanuts. I've been reading that guys are adjusting every 20 hrs. How often do you change oil on your bike ?

The 610's will be out in January. There $7399 and yes they are the best bang for the buck out there right now.

IS THIS THE ACTUAL PRICE? how come they are cheaper than last year's?

5000 KM service intervals for oil, valves ect. The biggest pain is changing the 2 oil filters on the bike. I will sometimes alternate and change 1 filter at this change and the other at the next. The downtube on the bike is also a built in oilcooler which allows extra volume for the engine. A lot of guys complain about filling and bleeding this downtube but I find the job to be pretty easy and straightforward..... I would much rather have this feature and spend an extra ten minutes changing oil than not have it and have the cooling fan running all the time in the slow going.....

Patience is a good thing.

Look at it this way. Husky does basically minimal advertising and there bikes sell out because people love the Husky. No other brand is selling out like Husky. The TE line up are just that good perfect there dualsports. They sold out in the last few years in 2 to 3 months.

They are coming in January. We have a lot of people who put down a $500 deposit and are willing to wait it out. I'd rather wait 5 or 6 weeks in the winter than buy something else that you won't enjoy as much.

I've ridden all those bikes except the 690. The 640, X-challenge , lc4 are all closer to being a real nice KLR 650. There all more street than dirt.

The TE 610 is like an XR 650 R with a 6 speed and fully street legal. You can race a TE 610 in Baja , ride long distance, hill climb and ride tight trails. It's a great do all bike.

No podium for the 40th anniversary team. Most riders were 60 plus years old and just wanted to finish. Most had not even ridden in the last 10 years. It was my job to chase them and pick up /re start the bike.

It was a lot of fun , the Husky finished 51hrs, cut off was 53 hrs . But we did beat one other team. The rest DNF'd out.

I more or less just wanted to go for the experience and see what Baja is all about. Next year we'll do a few Husky teams. I'm going to race and do team support. Learned lot's from Malcom Smith about set up and prep for Baja it was interesting pre running with him and working with him to dial in the bike.

so my husky dealer in kelowna told me today that the '08 te 610 is not "technically d.o.t. approved" in canada. what does this mean?

can you not make anything street legal ie: just a dirtbike with a baja kit on it?

as long as it passes a safety inspection it should be no problem, right?

i'm hoping 5thgear can set this straight.

thanks!
