So I just traded for a 2005 ktm 525sx, thought this would be a good place to ask what I should look out for on this bike and whether I can convert it to a 6 speed from a 4 speed. I looking at dual sporting this bike and also wondering if there is anyway of getting this bike registered and plated for street use?

Thanks

Pretty sure the answer on the plating question is a pretty solid "NO". ICBC has tried very hard to close all the loopholes for converting RUM bikes to street-legal. While you hear rumors of the odd exception, the reality is officially it's not possible any more.

" While you hear rumors of the odd exception"- YOU still have a plated RUM bike, that may be your biggest problem ever in your life, if -lets just speculate that if you hit/killed a lawyers wife and they had 3 small kid's and he found out that you had a dirtbike that you slipped through the cracks and managed to put a licience plate on the back of your bike making it appear to be street legal?

Your 4 speed to 6 speed tranny question,is a lot easier to solve! Just say'n, there is actually an end to the amount of money that the tranny conversion problem will eat up.

Yup, my thinking exactly. Even if you have a plate, you may not in fact have insurance, if ICBC lawyers can argue that you got the plate fraudulently. For me, it's never been worth that risk. Other folks have different opinions. But at the end of the day, it's simplest just to actually buy a bike that clearly is street legal if you really want the plate.
