Non dualsport insurance question

How do you guys insure regular dirtbikes? If example, if you were carrying a couple ofdirtbikes on the back of a pickup truck, and got into an accident on the street. I'm guessing the truck's insurance is not going to cover the bikes. Is there insurance for transporting offroad motorcycles? ICBC doesn't seem to do this.

Good question.

Owning a dual sport with insurance this is not a problem. I thought ICBC would sell you cargo insurance for the trailer? Maybe a rider on your house insurance?

Let me know what you find out

I have insured my '01 yz426 through ICBC but it was a pain in the a**. I have the paper in my hand. On the top it calls it a "Unlicenced Vehicle Policy (off highway and pleasure use)". I was insured for "loss" at $7000. It cost $137 for 3 months or $429 for a full year. It has a $300 deductable. It says for only vehicles operated by a person over 16 years of age and the operator must have a valid drivers licence for the vehicle insured. ( I just noticed this and I only hold a class 5 :spl:. I'm going to have to check into that). I only asked for theft and fire on my policy. Anyway, this is a start for you. I can FAX you a copy of the paper if you wish. This is just a suggestion and may not be the proper policy (disclaimer:cool:). If I can help you out drop me a P.M.. Note: It took a week of digging by the insurance company to find this policy and then it was by a girl that only knew about it because she insured her own bike). Oh yeah, and read all the fine print. Most of ICBC are a bunch of morons and you seem to have to do their job for them!!

I read the fine print on the back of the policy."When the vehicle is in operation, it must be used off highway only and only for pleasure purposes. When the vehicle is not in operation, insurance coverage under this policy applies only when the vehicle is on consignment or in storage on private property". I never got any liability on this policy, but if I remember right you can get it. All uncontrolled forestry roads and logging roads require some kind of liability if I remember right.

Sounds like my policy won't cover the bike in transport at all. All I'm really worried about is theft. As I said read all the fine print. I trusted the insurance company and now that I look at it, I may need a valid bike licence for the policy to be valid. I'll check into it tomorrow.

It alsosays something about trailers and I'm not sure what it means. "When a trailer owned by the insured, but not described on this policy, is used or operated in connection with the described all terrain vehicle, the insurance coverage under this policy will not be invalidated and the trailer and the all terrain vehicle will be considered as one vehicle for the purpose of this policy"

That's kind of strange. If your policy only covers theft, why would they say it must be used off highway. Where you use the bike shouldn't affect the theft coverage. Also, I don't see why you should need a class 6 licence for the policy. As for as I know, you don't need a licence to operate a dirtbike.

I'm also worried about theft, but not so much when it's at home. I keep it locked up well, plus I think the house insurance covers it.I'm worried about when I'm moving it. What if my truck gets stolen while I have my bike strapped in the back. It doesn't sound like your policy would cover that.

Please fax me a copy of the paper if you can. That would be very useful. I'll send an IM with my fax#

Thanks

I agree it is strange, thats why I wrote their wording of it. The off-highway thing is a given. Probably legal mumbo-jumbo, that's all. The class 6 thing's got me baffled too. I'm going to check into that today. I only got theft on mine but It has spots to fill in for third party legal liability, comprehensive etc... Just like a car insurance document. I'm just figuring out my new FAX/Copy/printer So let me know if you recieve it. I've been talking to someone about insurance on another forum also (you may be the same guy) I need to fax it to him too. Here goes......
