I am running a set of Metzelers. Karoo 2 up front and Karoo 'T' on the rear. Reasonably smooth on the pavement and good traction in the gravel. Haven't been brave enough to sink it in a mudhole yet. Not a huge inmprovement over the Battlewings on packed gravel, but much better on everything else. Also, the front doesn't wash and I can grab a decent handful of front brake where I could not with the B-wings. Other popular choice seem to be MT-21 up front and Mitas out rear. I ran TKC -80's on my KTM and they worked surprisingly well also, but I did not care for the price or performance in the loose & muddy.

I agree with the Mitas E09 on the rear as they provide good bang for the buck with decent off-road performance, relatively quite running considering the agressive pattern and available ina choice of plies depending on your needs.
For a front probably an MT-21.

I have a Mitas D09 and a maxxis in the front!
The Mitas is awsome! I have already 4500 km on it and is still good for like 2000k! And the price ......amayzing!!! Around 80$! I like it on the road and off road!
The Maxxis sucks! I will go for the Mitas also!

I agree with the E09. But for anything over 650 I would opt for the E09 reinforced ("dakar") version. Bumps the price up, but much stiffer sidewall will protect the rims and reduce pinch flats from sharpies.

I've noticed the "Dakars" have a stripe all around them, is that permanent or does that fade away?
